Title: I’m happy with it
Review: I am pretty happy with this. I set it up with redundant RAID and left half just for extra storage and the other half I set to a TimeMachine back up for one of my MacBook Pros. I have recovered stuff easily and used the extra drive space as a very fast connection for less frequently used but large files. Great as part of my network to organize things in different areas and move chunks of organized drives to the right devices. I say fast but if you are moving a terabyte I am not talking instant, just reasonable.

Title: Edited: Works well enough with a few mods.
Review: 2nd EditHaving turned off the disk sleep function the unit is performing much better than it was with the sleep function enabled. I’ve updated my review to four stars because the unit still has issues. I can just live with them now. They really should package the firmware update software with the unit or provide some other mechanism to disable it.Heads up Apple / Linux users, the firmware update only works with Windows. If you have a dual boot like I do, once you disable sleep in Windows it fixes it for Linux too. I assume that if you are an Apple user with access to a Windows computer, you can update the box’s firmware with the Windows machine and you’ll be good to go.Let me reiterate that the real issue lies in the unit’s poor cooling mechanism. My fix for that was to remove the top & put a small external fan blowing upward on the box. See the included photo for more information. With the top on my drives were running very hot at 150+ degrees Fahrenheit. Running you drives that hot long term will significantly shorten your drives’ life spans.Edited:After I wrote my review, I was contacted by the seller. She offered me a refund but asked me to try a firmware mod to resolve the drive sleeping issue by disabling it. She sent me a link to a site that looked really sketchy. I followed the link anyway and it turned out to be a safe site. After making the suggest mods to the firmware the box is much more responsive and does not lock all my drives up like it did originally. It works well enough now that I’ve decided to keep it.I’m leaving my review as 2 stars however due to the unresolved heating issue. And also because the seller instructed me to not worry about the heating issue since hard drives are meant to run hot. That is simply untrue. Hard drives are designed to run in a temperature range of 50°F to 122°F. When I checked the temperature of my drives at the time I originally installed them in the box the temperature was above 150°F. The only safe way to use the device is as pictured: with the top off and an external fan blowing directly on the box.Original post:This rig will overheat your drives. There is no fan for air circulation. When I first installed my drives, I thought to check it after about 30 minutes and found all 5 of my drives WAY to hot to touch. Running your drives this hot will significantly shorten their life spans. The only way the to use it safely is to remove the top and put a small fan in front of it. Additionally, the sleep mode sucks. The drives go into sleep mode within seconds & takes forever to wake back up.I wish someone would create a 5 drive bay like my old 4 bay Mediasonic pro box. Unfortunately for me 4 bay is the largest they make. All the five bays I’ve reviewed have serious issues.

Title: Great idea but not functional
Review: I bought this as I have 5 external HD’s on my desk and wanted to cleanup the look of the desk (not only from number of power cords but desk clutter. Found this and though the reviews weren’t great, decided to give it try. Looks nice and seemed to fit what I was looking for. However, after removing the HD’s from their external enclosures and dropping (not literally), into the slots, connected to the USB and power, the PC didn’t recognize any of the drives — didn’t even make the familiar noise that a USB device was connected. So, I started troubleshooting and found the PC will recognize two drives but the minute I put in a third (powered the device down), the PC won’t recognize anything. In fact the unit drive indicators come on as normal, the drives spin up, then a few seconds later, the indicators go out and then back on. Drives stay powered on though. The indicators then come on again. It just cycles like this and the PC doesn’t recognize that a USB is even plugged in. So I am returning it. No, I didn’t damage the drives removing them from their enclosures. Everyone one of them comes up fine on the PC if I stick them into a single dock. My guess is that something in the USB bus inside the unit.

Title: DOA – I was refunded without question
Review: UPDATE: I adjusted my 1 star to 3, though I can’t really imagine what rating I aught to give but I would give customer service a 5 since I was contacted, as a result of this review, and offered a refund without questions asked and no need to return the product (which is good because I tossed it out). Thanks to their extraordinary customer support my faith in this brand has been restored.Additionally, after some testing I discovered that it was the power brick that was faulty since I tried my older one with this dock and it worked.- OLD -DOA. I bought one of these before and despite its glitches it works ok so I got another but it doesn’t even power on. This makes me a little apprehensive to buy this brand again. This is a 5 bay docking enclosure.

Title: External HDD Housing
Review: Great product! No problems using or installing USB does seem to be a little slow, but it is manageable. The cable is of average length but could have been longer. Would recommend this product to anyone.

Review: Ok so I have only had this for a couple of weeks but so far it is operating perfectly well. Fast read / write speeds. I like the fact that after a few minutes (not sure how many) of not being used it turns itself into standby mode and so the fans turn off. Ok the fans are a bit on the noisy side but if – as I am – you only use this enclosure for backing up purposes this shouldn’t be a concern. I am not sure about putting the lid on it when in heavy use particularly if you have multiple drives running because of the potential for heat build up. Perhaps it may be fine but given others have reported an issue with this I don’t take the risk. It is easy enough to take the lid off when in use and pop it back on afterwards.
