With over one billion tonnes of steel produced last year, China’s lead is nearly tenfold the second-highest country.

In recent years, China has aimed to curb “blind expansion” in the industry. As part of this, it has urged companies to not produce steel without an order, at a loss, or without a confirmed payment. Going further, Beijing announced it plans to cut steel output, with some estimating a reduction of up to 50 million tonnes this year.

With 149.4 million tonnes of steel production, India follows next. In 2024, Tata Steel Group was the world’s tenth-largest steelmaker, producing over 31 million tonnes. Driven by a surge in infrastructure investment, India’s steel consumption rose 8% last year and is expected to maintain a similar growth rate in 2025.

Japan takes third place with 84 million tonnes, led by Nippon Steel, while the U.S. follows closely with 79.5 million tonnes.
