Title: Concrete and Gold…Indeed!
Review: Let me warn you now – I’ve been a Foo Fighters fan since I was 11 years old so this review will be biased. When I first heard the single “Run” I was confused. Not because of the song, but because I thought the Foo’s were on a hiatus. Nonetheless, I thought it was a heavier kick-ass song than what I was used to but I knew that the album wasn’t going to disappoint.A few months later, I was on YouTube and I saw a thumbnail of the Foo’s on the roof of a house, eyes glowing. Again, I was confused. Two seconds later, I realized that it was a new song. I listened to “The Sky Is A Neighborhood” three times before I decided that this would be my favorite song on a album that I hadn’t heard yet. I had to look up some info and I found that the album would be released in three weeks. I preordered and waited.I heard “The Line” on a baseball commercial and I found the audio on YouTube. I knew I would have a perfect album after listening to this song about ten times. “The Line” is just one of those songs that reminds me why I fell in love with this band in the first place. The guitars, the vocals, the bass, the drums, the lyrics, the chaos…just amazing. When I received Concrete And Gold and I was blown away. Hands down, this is a tie with my second favorite album from them (my first favorite being The Colour And The Shape, and the tie being shared with Wasting Light — but then again, how is it even fair to “rank” their albums?? They are ALL amazing).Their opener “T-Shirt” reminded me of “Doll”, a nice one minute song that will set the tone for the entire album.”Make It Right” had me headbanging with it’s guitar kicks and Hawkins consistent and tight drum hits. While I thought TSIAN would be my favorite song, once I heard “La Dee Da” that notion went out the window. This dirty, gritty, heavy-hitting bass filled song is the anthem of my life and everything I stand for (but again, I’m biased).”Dirty Water” is one of those songs that you think would be a easy-going song, but then it slowly climaxes to something great (think of “Come Alive” from Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace). I can’t tell you how many times I’ve woken up in the middle of the night with Dave’s voice screaming –Bleed dirty water/Breathe dirty sky– in an overlapping style.”Arrows” was different in terms of lyrical content but I was still pleased. It reminded me of one of their older albums in terms of sound (I really like the drums on this one).Where is your Shangri la now? Dave asks. And I often ask myself that question any time “Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)” pops randomly into my head. It’s very reminiscent of the Beatles or even The Beach Boys. It’s one of those songs that you wouldn’t expect from the Foo’s but you still find it lodged in your eardrum long after the album is finished.”Sunday Rain” is just plain amazing. Paul McCartney on drums? Taylor Hawkins singing vocals? VOCALS? It is 6:11 minutes of pure joy. This is the surprising factor of the entire album (I believe every album has one). Hawkins is damn knarly, too.Our titular title track is most definitely the heaviest of the entire album. It’s slower pace forces you to listen to it at its rate and you can’t help but to close your eyes and tap your foot to this somewhat uplifting song.Well. If you’ve read this far, I’m pretty sure that you’ve decided to buy this album….or not? If you decide not to, you’d be making a tremendous mistake. Don’t be fooled by the negative reviews. Deep down in your heart, you and I both know, that the Foo Fighters have and never will disappoint.

Title: The Album I Never Knew I Wanted Them To Make
Review: The lead up to Concrete and Gold was probably the first time I can remember being worried about a Foo Fighters record. For context, I was VERY excited for Sonic Highways. I loved the idea of the hbo series (which I did wind up loving), and the band would be coming off of one of their three or four best albums in Wasting Light, but in the end, I was very disappointed with it. While there were moments and songs that I love quite a bit, there were just too many missteps in the eight-song runtime for me to be impressed.Fast-forward to the Saint Cecelia EP and my confidence is (very) unexpectedly restored. The songs were super fun and energetic, it was short and sweet, and the band released it for free at a perfect time for a great reason. Things were looking up.Then, some time later, we hear our first snippets of the next album’s material and I was… concerned. At the time, the brief samples that wound up being Run and La Dee Da left a lot to be desired. The riffs felt too simple and the lyrics lackluster, and these concerns only grew when we heard The Sky is a Neighborhood for the first time. Really fun, catchy chorus, but the songwriting issues that plagued Sonic Highways seemed to be showing up again. I feared the worst and genuinely felt the band’s best material was forever in the past.As it turns out, context is important. When I heard the full songs these snippets belonged to and how they fit together on the album, I was shocked by how much I enjoyed them. The production from Greg Kurstin adds a ton of character to the songs without ever overshadowing the base instrumentals, and the countless harmonies layered throughout the record are a welcome addition to the Foos’ sound we’ve become accustomed to over the years.Dave’s songwriting is way less restricted here than it was on Sonic Highways, and aside from a couple of instances of unnecessary repetition, his lyrics are very lean, catchy, and full of a unique imagery that we haven’t seen in awhile. Each song sounds different from the last, and each band member (including now full-time keyboardist Rami Jaffee) sounds distinct for the first time since I don’t know when. All in all, I’m just really happy with how this album turned out. I love the first eight songs, and there’s only one that I don’t really care for (The Line). The rest make for a very fun and cohesive listening experience, full of classic rock influences mixed with modern pop sensibilities. I’m sure this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and if you don’t like the Foo Fighters already, I don’t think this will change your mind. But if it does click for you, I think it will REALLY click for you.Favorite Tracks: Dirty Water, Arrows, Make it Right, La Dee Da, Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)

Title: … expressed how sorry he was this CD was getting bad reviews. Come on–how many bands do you know …
Review: I have to agree with the reviewer who expressed how sorry he was this CD was getting bad reviews. Come on–how many bands do you know that started in the 90s and are still going strong? So they experiment with their music, there’s nothing wrong with that–I believe they call that growth. What’s more–how many bands do you know who always go balls out whether they’re recording in the studio or playing live.Who didn’t see them perform “Rock & Roll” at the Kennedy Center’s tribute to Led Zeppelin? Even Obama was jumping out of his seat.I was telling a firend–I may not be entirely sure why I love this band, except they always give it their all & kick ass. So if you don’t like the direction this band is going, fine by us, hang it up and go back to your little synth-pop music culture. As for the rest of us who appreciate true rock & roll and the direction the band is or isn’t going–eat our dust!

Review: Oh my word. This album is, in my opinion, the Foos greatest along with Wasting Light. Equal footing, even though they are two different sounds.Wasting Light is perfectly, beautifully raw, unblemished and immaculate Foos. This is more experimental in the sense that there are some epic songs which have a lot of production. There’s some great electronic production and sound effects going on.One HUGE thing that needs to be said straight away is: when I first played this album I was really angry.I was incensed by the seemingly diabolical production. The whole album sits really REALLY REALLY low . And the only way I can make out what Dave’s singing is by playing it really loud. But even then I have to read the lyrics. Maybe that was their objective, but I can’t help but feel it’s almost potentially a manufacturing fault. Everything sits really really low, and so much of what they intended just all swims around in a big blur of deep sound. There is nowhere near as much clarity as there should be and initially I wrote the album off. I found it diabolical that the production could be so bad from a band that I have come to regard as almighty. For example, in Happy Ever After, there is a guitar fill in the middle which is about ten times louder than anything else in the track, for its entire duration!!! WHat is that all about???To play this album requires a complete overhaul of all the levels, and even then it is still inescapably paltry. And personally, I don’t have the inclination to do that every time I want to listen to it. (I’m not 20 anymore!! And in my lazy old age I want to just put it on and enjoy. Not spend the first five minutes re-adjusting all the levels. Especially when every other album of recent times does not need such attention.)So why the five stars?Because I have learned to live with the utterly appalling sound and as a result of my persistence have discovered some of the Foos most epic songs. There are 8 songs on this album that I would regard as amongst their best ever. Top of that list would be Arrows, then Sky is a Neighborhood, and Run. T-Shirts has one of the greatest pieces of guitar I have ever heard and it is quite frankly criminal that the song is only 1:22 long and stops just at the moment it becomes mighty. But I guess in so doing lies it’s beauty. So all in all, this can be regarded an experimental album; production-wise. And production-wise it failed. Which is a massive shame because the content is sent straight from God.There are some who have compared this album to Pink Floyd, (and there are a couple of moments where I get that.) Someone on iTunes even compared it to the Beatles white album??!! I’m not sure I agree with that but I get the point they were trying to make.In an ideal world they would get someone else to re-do (re-produce) the entire thing so that the levels work. And then it would be mind blowing. But maybe this is a lesson in perfection: isn’t there a lesson somewhere which says that we can’t have it all? Imperfection is actually perfection?? I don’t know, look it up.The mighty mighty songs make the atrocious sound quality worth bearing. But only just.
