Apple’s production in India reportedly surged in the early stages of 2025, with up to 17% of global iPhone production stemming from the country.
Apple has been gradually expanding its manufacturing operations, shifting away from a China-centric approach in favor of one that also exists in India. Over the years, it has seen progress, but it has apparently exploded in 2025.
According to data from Canalys seen by Yahoo, iPhone production in India has risen 53% year-over-year, hitting 23.9 million units.
That production boom is expected to continue further. While it currently supplies approximately 16% to 17% of iPhones in the world, which has grown in just a few short years, it is projected to reach a 25% share by 2027.
That acceleration is likely to be driven by moves such as Foxconn’s $1.5 billion investment in the country.
Apple has also been moving towards producing newer models in India, including high-end models such as the iPhone 16 Pro. It is almost certain that the iPhone 17 will be produced in some capacity in India too, with it reportedly entering trial production in the country.
Part of this shift is caused by the ongoing U.S. tariff battle, which has seen China become a major target of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The backdrop of escalating tariffs prompted a change in Apple’s import patterns. In May, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that half of the iPhone sales in the United States in the second quarter involved iPhones produced in India.
The Indian government also saw this change too. In May, a report revealed an increase in the value of Apple exports by 116% in April versus the same month one year prior.
Not just manufacturing
The shift in India isn’t just from building iPhones. It’s from buying them too.
The report adds that, in terms of demand in India, Apple is now in the top five smartphone brands sold in the country. Revenue from iPhone sales in India for Q1 2025 is up 28% year-on-year.
The reason for this is said to be due to an increase in premium device adoption, as well as tempting financing offers.
The demand is certainly something Apple has noticed. It is currently in the middle of building a new Apple Store in Mumbai’s newest shopping mall, the Sky City Mall, as well as reports of one being made in Bengaluru’s Phoenix Mall of Asia.
