Coal is the world’s leading source of power, accounting for 34% of global electricity generation in 2024.
Global coal production totaled 9.24 billion tonnes in 2024, up 0.9% year-over-year. This infographic shows the world’s largest coal producers, based on data from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy.
China Dominates Global Coal Production
In 2024, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for more than 80% of global coal production, with China alone making up 64% of the region’s coal output.

China alone accounted for more than half of the world’s coal production in 2024 with nearly 4.8 billion tonnes, surpassing the combined output of the next 10 countries on the list. It’s also the largest consumer and importer of coal globally.
India and Indonesia follow China with a significantly lower coal output, although coal production in both countries grew by around 7% in 2024.
Among Western nations, the U.S. leads with 464 million tonnes of coal produced in 2024. However, U.S. coal production also declined by 11.6% year-over-year.
Other large coal producers include Australia and Russia, both churning out over 400 million tonnes of coal in 2024. Interestingly, many of the largest coal producers are heavily reliant on fossil fuels for their energy needs.
Where Coal Production is Growing
Energy priorities differ globally—developing and low-income countries are typically more reliant on fossil fuels, while developed nations are prioritizing clean energy generation more aggressively.
In 2024, coal production grew fastest in Mongolia, up 27.7%, followed by the Middle East region at 18.8%. Türkiye, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan also saw strong growth in coal production.
In contrast, most European nations, along with the U.S. and Canada, posted double-digit declines in their coal production.
