Title: Works well.
Review: The best way to back up the operating system on a computer’s boot drive (or partition) is to image it. However, the only way to know if the software creating the image will be able to successfully restore the image is to restore it. Since you don’t want to restore an image to your one working boot drive (or partition) only to have the restore fail, leaving you with a dead computer, it’s safer to swap out the boot drive with another one and restore the image to that one. That way, if the image fails to restore, you still will have a usable boot drive. It’s not necessary to test an image every time after creating one but it’s a good idea to do so every now and then in case a computer update borks the imaging software.Swapping the boot drives in my laptop is easy—I can do it in a minute if I rush—but to get to the boot drive in my desktop computer, I have to unplug three DisplayPort cables and the card’s power cable from the graphics card, then remove the graphics card just to be able to get to the boot drive. It takes between 13 and 25 minutes to do the swap, depending on how good or bad a day I’m having (and, being a handicapped flatulent geriatric, I tend to have more bad days that good ones).Enter the ToughArmor MB840M2P-B Mobile Rack and its swappable trays. I have three boot drives for my desktop computer, Samsung 512GB 970 Pros (the last good Samsung NVMe drive). After installing the dock in my desktop computer and testing it to make sure it worked, I ordered some extras trays (caddies) for the Mobile Rack so I can quickly and easily swap multiple SSDs in and out of my computer (I only use SSDs). I like to have more than one boot drive so I can swap them out every so often plus it’s nice to have an extra, ready to go boot drive that’s can be quickly swapped in if the one inside the computer goes belly up and can’t be restored. Now I can easily swap out boot drives even faster than I can in my laptop. The one complaint I have for the tray is it doesn’t provide even pressure on the entire length of the SSDs which can create problems for getting good contact on the thermal pad between the drive and the body of the tray. The Samsung drives i’m using are especially problematic because varying chip height means varying thicknesses of thermal pads needed to be used. Even then I wasn’t getting even contact between the drive and tray body and making the pads thicker would have just bowed the SSD, making contact even worse. I took care of the problem by adding a little thermal paste between the pads and the body of the tray to fill all the gaps.If I ever need to use double sided SSD in the trays, I’ll probably use thermal putty on both sides of the SSD so the cover can also act as a heat sink without bulging out. I’ve already removed the labels from the covers and replaced them with another one identifying each one but, if I do have to go to a double sided SSD, I’ll remove those labels and replace them with smaller ones away from the chips so the cover can get more contact to air. Fortunately, the chips on the underside of a double sided SSD usually run cooler than the other side which has the hotter running controller chip. The SSDs I’m using for boot drives are Gen 3 and seem to cool just fine. I don’t know how cool a Gen 4 SSD will be. Gen 5 probably won’t have any more of a cooling problem than Gen 4 SSDs unless the dock is capable of running at Gen 5 speeds, which advertises it only runs at Gen 3 or 4 speeds. Also note that these are NOT hot swappable! You have to shut down the computer before swapping to avoid damaging the drives and maybe the computer.

Title: Fine cooling
Review: I bought the main unit “MB840M2P-B” from Amazon Japan even though expensive. But the replacement tray (this, “MB840TP-B”) was not available in Japan.I just stuck thermal pads on both sides of the M2, but the cooling effect is amazing. lower than the CPU.Now room 28C (82F) composite(M2) 28C(82F) CPU 32C(9F)My system:PC case: Corsair Air 540CPU: AMD Ryzen7 5800XMOBO: Gigabyte X570 Aorus MasterCPU cooling: Deepcool water cooling Castle 280EX sandwiched fansUnfortunately, there is no diagram of how to insert the M2.For that reason, I ruined one M2.

Title: Handy when you have multiple M.2 devices
Review: Adding M.2 drives is a breeze, just make sure to not force the metal cover onto the drive. The cover should clamp down without much force and to remove it just push on the tab at the end and it should pop right up. I forced the cover on when the drive wasn’t in properly and I almost ruined the caddy trying to pry the cover back off.Why would you use this caddy you might ask. Well if you want to periodically swap drives (maybe booting different operating systems), or you need to perform maintainence on M.2 drives you use in external enclosures, using caddies for this eliminates the need to open you computer to plug it in a free slot.

Title: A bit fiddly to get the drive inserted in the case
Review: Once you figure out how this tray works it’s pretty slick, there are good instructions but it’s still a bit fiddly
