London-based Quantum Motion Technologies Ltd. announced today it has delivered the industry’s first quantum computer built using traditional semiconductor chipmaking processes, the same technology used in conventional computers.
The new system was installed at the UK National Quantum Computing Centre, the United Kingdom’s national lab dedicated to accelerating quantum computing research. It uses standardized mass-manufacturable 300-millimeter silicon wafers and is the first spin-qubit computer installed as part of the center’s quantum computing testbed program.
Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors, or CMOS, are a widely used chip type prominent across most consumer and enterprise technology. The fabrication process creates chips for integrated circuits used in core processors, memory modules and digital sensors found inside computers, smartphones and other devices.
“This is quantum computing’s silicon moment,” said James Palles‑Dimmock, chief executive of Quantum Motion. “Today’s announcement demonstrates you can build a robust, functional quantum computer using the world’s most scalable technology, with the ability to be mass-produced.”
Quantum Motion designed its systems to be data center-friendly and fit into a footprint of around three 19-inch server racks, which house the refrigeration and control electronics. The auxiliary equipment is designed to sit separately, so it can be integrated into most cramped data centers and still have room for upgrades to its quantum processing unit without increasing its overall size.
To create the specialized machines, the company developed a scalable tile architecture that includes compute, readout and control elements that can be repeatedly printed onto a chip. According to the company, this allows not only for mass production but also enables expansion to millions of qubits per QPU in the future.
Qubits, or quantum bits, represent the basic unit of logical information in quantum computing. They are similar to bits in classical computing. However, unlike classical bits, which can only be a 1 or a 0, qubits can be in a state of 1, 0 or a potential of both at the same time. By using this property, along with special cases like entanglement and interference, quantum computers can carry out highly complex, massively parallel computations.
This architecture, combined with the massively parallel computational power, enables quantum computers to perform calculations in seconds or minutes that would take classical computers months or years to complete. This makes quantum computers ideal for accelerating discoveries across industries and sciences such as chemistry, drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling and logistics.
“This new form of quantum computer from Quantum Motion will take this groundbreaking technology another step closer to commercial viability – which could help support healthcare with faster drug discovery or clean energy by optimising energy grids,” said U.K. Science Minister Lord Vallance.
Quantum Motion isn’t the only quantum computer company working with silicon-based quantum processors. SemiQon Technology Oy, a Finnish company, launched a cryogenically optimized CMOS transistor in 2024 and demonstrated large-scale efficiency for quantum dot qubits in 2025. Its technology allows bringing control electronics onto a chip and inside the cryostat, the supercooling apparatus used to keep quantum computers stable.
Alongside the new initiative with the NQCC, Quantum Motion was recently awarded the Silicon Quantum Error Correction project, which aims to provide the first demonstration of a quantum computing system capable of high-fault tolerance through repeated rounds of quantum error correction. It’s a collaboration between Quantum Motion and University College London that the company believes will pave the way to a goal of 1 trillion quantum operations in error-corrected systems by 2035.
