There is methyl alcohol, which is highly toxic to humans (we drink ethyl alcohol) that aliens could potentially drink without it necessarily being any stronger or weaker
Likewise, aliens might consider being offered a shot glass of vodka to be an assassination attempt
emergency induction straw!
Greater than 70% alcohol is a usable disinfectant. You can drink 99% just fine without immediate cell damage. Humans are poretty resistant to the stuff.
The closing tune sounds suspiciously like the Star Wars cantina scene.
14:15 They taste like chicken
It seems you keep forgetting that in Star Trek… all humanoids have a common ancestor. They share DNA, therefore cross breeding isn't far fetched at all.
I doubt alien food and drink would be banned on principle as its such a good racket for planetary FDAs to charge people money to sell their exotic food and drink stuff. Plus if your an interstellar company paying for a species compatibility test isn't even a drop in the bucket.
Just for the record, dinosaurs taste like chicken, or to be precise chicken tastes like a dinosaur 😊.

As a connaisuer of funny ragdolls, I respectfully disagree.
But as I agree so many things you say, I'll just ignore it, lol.
hmm…Dear Sir! the home made vodka I make on our lab-grade still is about 60% alcohol 🙂 and it is quite tasty:D
Hi @Isaac Arthur I've been watching your content for years and I was wondering if you have any helpful videos or advice for writing softer or more classic style sci-fi?
A shot of liquor has the same amount of ethanol as a glass of wine or a mug of beer. I never ran the numbers, but it's a plausible claim. That means that drinking a beer gets you just as drunk as drinking a glass of wine or a shot of liquor, right? For that matter, drinking that same amount of pure ethanol would have the same impact on your system.
In high school I was taught that in a required public health class. I went to three different colleges in three different states that included the same claim in their required public health classes. In the state of Texas I was certified to serve alcohol which required taking a class which taught the same material. This seems to be the official dogma of the US government. There's just one problem- it's horse hockey!
Anyone who's had any experience actually drinking beer, wine, and liquor knows that represents a scale of getting drunker faster. (I once smelled pure ethanol in a biology lab. I expect taking a shot of it would make a normal person vomit immediately.) They all have same amount of ethanol, but that's a trivial observation. What you dump into your stomach gets absorbed by diffusion, and the rate of diffusion varies with concentration. When you drink liquor, let alone pure ethanol, more ethanol hits your blood stream faster than when you drink beer. You get drunker.
So why do people keep repeating this claim? Today it's just meant to discourage drinking. That doesn't make any sense (sounds to me like it's saying if you drink beer, you might as well drink liquor!) and is counter-productive in a number of ways (misinformation is never good for making positive change), but I guess that's what people are thinking. But that doesn't explain where it came from.
There was one group of people for whom it would have been very important to establish that drinking beer was just as intoxicating as drinking liquor- teetotalers. Most of the people in the Temperance Movement just wanted to outlaw hard liquor and leave beer and wine legal, but the teetotalers wanted to outlaw all alcohol so it was very important to them to establish that drinking beer or wine was just as bad as drinking liquor. So they came up with this BS argument, and it's still be taught in schools to this day.
Fun historical fact- the teetotalers won the war for the Temperance Movement and lost the goal of the Temperance Movement. If Prohibition had only outlawed liquor, I think it's very likely liquor would still be illegal today. Instead they had to outlaw all alcohol, and there was no way that was going to stand.
Today you can see the Pro-Life making the same mistakes all over. First they wanted to let the states decide, then they wanted a national ban at 15 weeks with exceptions, now they want to outlaw IVF. Hardcore Pro-Lifers want a complete national ban with no exceptions. They're going to win the Movement, and lose the war. A national ban at 15 weeks with exceptions might survive in the long-term, but a complete ban will not. They're going against an 80% majority of the people that will remake American politics for a generation.
This is what fanatics do- over and over again throughout history. They find bad situations and make them worse until people can't stand them, and then they lose.
In point of fact, most human diseases do in fact originate in animals, the most recent factual examples being bird flu, swine flu, and monkeypox, and the recent other virus, which the government pretended came from a bat.
2:22 Why are aliens always naked?
I always thought the 3rd table alien just couldn't hold his liquor and passed out LOL.
At long last a follow up on the 3 aliens meme 😂 by Ken York
This is something that always bothered me in most scifi.
Great Nebula watch.
You should enable comments on Nebula.
So we can discuss and comment there too.
"My son asked me what dinosaurs tasted like" probably chicken.
You just had to mention Mikey Spock, didn't you?
And all this time I thought that Alien was just "Falling Down Drunk" … not Dead… 😣
A popular trope in the HFY subgenre is how humans ethanol and capsaicin are so deadly to xenos that the galactic gov declared them weapons of mass destruction.
But as this video explains, it's just as likely the other way too. After all, we can't be the only sapients with vices.
In reality, alien food and drink would more likely poison us and vice versa. Imagine showing an alien a steak, and it eats it, and proceeds to die of iron poisoning
Turian brandy… triple-filtered… introduced through an emergency induction port…
The reason for the star trek alien alcohol being so strong is because the federation has essentially banned alcohol.
The alien alcohol is probably as strong as our vodka is now. It's that star fleet alcohol may be more like kombucha.
Lmao id kind of hope that by then, such silly habits like intoxication by neurotoxin would be shunned by most intelligence.
Wow this video went incredibly quick. Makes me appreciate the time to sit back and relax for your full episodes!
A short one today! Bite-sized?
I drank a bottle of beer while watching this episode 😅
Why am I watching this while hungry? LOL
DEAD!? Ah, okay. I thought it had simply passed out like most drunks.
LOL the carnival sideshow backing sound track is so :+D
The universe is large enough that somewhere, there are beings who enjoy oleum fizzers or chlorine triflouride martinis. Maybe even enjoy NaK shots…
Not related to topic, but I was watching this one when my wife, who only watches with me occasionally, got a wide-eyed look and asked, "Is that Arthur? His speech impediment is almost completely gone!"
So congratulations! I suppose those of us who listen every week have missed how great the improvement is, the gradual improvement sneaking up on us! It also probably means we don't quite appreciate what an effort it has been for you, so know that it IS quite a difference.
Warp core beer is especially potent.
In order to save the planet I avoid single use plastic by drinking beer. Alien beer you say…… Screw the planet.
Great video! But one fact check for you, that 7 kcal/g measurement for ethanol is a common misinterpretation. That is the total energy content of ethanol, but the actual amount of energy the body derives from ethanol is next to none. So in reality for humans ethanol essentially isn't an energy source, especially when you factor in how much energy it takes to get rid of the alcohol.
Yes! Finally one for us beer drinkers. I knew you had it in you Arthur 🍺
