Feeling nostalgic for these games lately I started on purpose, seeking out retrospectives and reviews. And I don’t think I need to say this but I will. This is by far the most comprehensive and best one I’m not finished yet. I’m only up to Metroid prime 2. And watching the retrospective on this game finally brought me to the comment section. Metroid prime two was the first but sadly not the last Metroid game after a great loyalty to the series all the way back to its roots, that I put down and quit playing and never finished. Not that I found it to be terribly difficult although it looks like it becomes difficult. It’s because I found a boring and tedious remember playing and having a little to no excitement for what was happening and just losing interest completely.
Please don't reply to this comment.
Metroid dread is not hard at all, the only easier game in the series is zero mission, dread is too easy most of the time
this made me go out and buy shit for my switch for the first time in 4 years
Hard disagree: Surface of SR388 is an amazing song. One of the best themes from the whole series.
The only issue with Metroid 2 is the lack of a map. Other than that, it holds up well today. Much better than NESTroid. It also has the most significant story in the entire series.
2:17:16 fresh paint of coat is a funny spoonerism lmao, love the video!
1:17 Just me or did this dude let one rip on the down low?
I always assumed Prime Hunters was a bigger hit than that.
The Spyro trilogy is absolutely a REMAKE, not a remaster. A remaster is things like uncompressed textures, new lighting or particle effects, maybe even game ported to run on its sequel's engine. A remake is a game that is technically an entirely new game, just reusing an old design or a title. I doubt the spyro remake has a line of code or a single asset in common with the originals. For all intents and purposes it is a fully new game, just one mimicing a game that existed previously. That's what differentiates a remaster (like remastering a recording or remastering a film by scanning the original media and running some algorithms on it) from a remake (like making a movie with the same name as an earlier movie).
Damn. this is the second video of yours I watch, amazing. After Castlevania, Metroid is another game I love because of the loneliness and ambient, (I listen the music while working) I hope they make more games like Dread and maybe a remaster Super Metroid.
4:01:58 – leave it to IGN to cite "All old games" as a negative for a re-release
Metroid Dread's release and insane quality reminds my of that old fighter that comes out of retirement and shows all the younger generation how it is done.
In Metroid Dread I also loved that ADAM being Raven Beak was right in front of our noses from the get go to anyone that had played the other games and followed the lore. The moment he calls her by name and the fact he outright tells us he is going to lose contact before we are even down there too. And Samus knew it wasn't him the entire time and was just playing along till she had the chance to confront him.
I actually remember reading the prequel comic as a kid….. I am damn old!
Excellent video. Enjoyed every minute
In prime the moment you get the morphball boost you can jet around all over the place with ease. You just need to practice the angles of boosts.
Super Metroid is my 2nd favourite video game of all time, just narrowly behind Zelda: A Link the the Past. Bare in mind I have a strict one per franchise rule otherwise my top 10 is just Zelda, Castlevania and Mario games with like one spot for Metroid and Final Fantasy in there somewhere. I will make an exception for Prime though. I can't in all good conscience not put both that and Super on my list.
I personally think the scores for the OG Metroid tanking come down to the gamers playing it. My generation were raised on games that didn't hold your hand and let you largely figure it out and draw your own maps, so the younger generation who are going back to play it now just give up because they aren't being told where to go. I play the OG game once or twice a year and I know where everything is so it isn't an issue for me but I can totally understand someone going in fresh and giving up within an hour or two.
This is weird, but Metroid and Super Mario Brothers 2 were the pack in games that came with my friends NES system. I think it was a weird regional promotion. I got mine 6 months later , and it only came with Super Mario Brothers 2. So this was the only game we really played for months.
Thanks for the video, I've been refraining from watching a dread review since I didn't wanted to be spoiled but after your documentary I feel relieved that the game seems to live to my expectations and feel a renewed desire to play it.
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Heb 9:27)
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalms 34:18)
When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. (Mark 2:17)
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
Is Metroid's gun attached to his arm or his suit?
great discoveries
2:17:17 "fresh paint of coat" so adorable 🤣🤣
This channel is seriously underrated, I LOVE your style and just IMMACULATE pacing.
thank you for all your effort.
GOD METROID PRIME PINBALL WAS SO DAMN GOOD! GLAD TO SEE SOMEONE GIVE IT SOME LOVE!
Fwiw with Federation Force it rly is a fun time with friends. The controls felt pretty solid to me as someone who has always loved gyro aiming and with friends it really is a great time and Next Level deserves some credit for making a really solid game. Just a shame that like you said, the solo experience is so brutally meh.
The PvP soccer mode was also super fun!
2:29:20 Odd the way you describe Zero Mission as being less conducive to tine attacking because it has a couple linear segments. I just can't fathom why that impacts it negatively, but you present it as a self evident statement. Barring that most popular speedruns are for more linear games, but routing out items to get or not get and uncovering the bevy of alternative pathways through ZM to find the fastest routes makes it extremely conducive to time attacks.
If anything the original becomes infinitely more solvable and thus super linear far quicker because its moreso about just memorizing the single quickest path thru the game with the linear toolset.
I love both games, but that statement just felt so bizarre to me.
I was waiting to see if you said it first before commenting….but Metroid, is NOT actually a Metroidvania,
They have nothing from Castlevania in them
the term is supposed to describe any Castlevania game (a traditionally linear series) that has Metroid style exploration (Like Symphony of the Night) and could be used to describe any game with elements of both series
But for some dumb reason seems to be continuously mis-applied to any game that has this Metroid style exploration but has litterally NOTHING from Castlevania in them
Now i know you will probably argue that its just taken on that meaning now, but to that i say that it dosnt matter how many people use the phrase "could care less" when they actually mean they couldnt …….they are still flipping wrong 😂
You didnt play prime very well. None of the areas have a single entrance and exit. They all have multiple exits to other areas
Return of Samus on the GB was my first Metroid game and I loved it. Have played every game in the system since then
I heard you say you read these long after it's posted. So I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work. I'm new to your channel but I loved the dracula video. Exited to watch the Metroid one! ❤
1:08:25 so you're tellin me you DIDN'T save the animals… For shame
I didn't really get into Metroid until Metroid Prime. Bought it on release and it blew my mind. It's now one of my favorite game series. Thanks for this retrospective!
Thank you very much for making this video ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ. Franchises like Castlevania and Metroid genuinely deserve people like you, who create content with such deep and rich understanding of media literacy, and history (both in-game and IRL).
My first metroid game was zero mission as a kid, im gonna try to find the cartridge. Thank you so much for this!
Prime hunter was my first metroid game. I was stuck on the first room for a hour. As I never though to shoot the door open but I was like 8 at the time. I still remember its scan data. "Ment to keep out small rodents"
I really hope Metroid 6 features the X Parasites again as well as Samus' Metroid powers as a gameplay mechanic. I think the X isn't fully explored yet and are the basis of some very cool enemy design opportunities.
Thanks so much for your works !!
I'll admit, that Vexx comment hurt a lil
I like dread but idk if I can call it the best high budget action exploration game ever made.
1:34:39 How TF are you in the Thermal Visor section with the Gravity suit and Plasma beam lol. Unless you are on version 1.0 in this recording, that level of sequence breaking is unreal lol.
Just a quick note: at no point in Metroid Fusion there is a monster electrifying the station's water.
EDIT: Another mistake of Fusion: The BSL only objective was NOT to replicate the enviroment of SR 388. In fact, only Sector 1 emulates said enviroment.
EDIT 2: Yet another mistake from Fusion: Samus doesn't ask ADAM to stop the whole Federation thing until after Ridley is defeated and he closes her inside the Navigation Room.
EDIT 3: The area you called "Chozodia" at around 2:15:00 is actually Crateria
EDIT 4: Samus controls quite differently in Zero Mission from Metroid Fusion. For starters, she is far more agile, she can bomb jump infinitely and she can wall jump against a single wall. Also, unlike in Metroid Fusion, Samus does not get the "ledge grab" ability from the start. It's a power up called Power Grip that you encounter later in the game.
EDIT 5: Metroid Zero Mission Save Rooms don't restore health nor ammo, with the only exception being the ones you encounter on the Mothership and on Chozodia.
EDIT 6: The cutscene where Samus reflects on her past in Chozodia lands whether you read the manga or not. If you didn't read the manga, it comes as a revelation that the Chozo raised Samus and the scene still has a powerful emotional impact on the player.
EDIT 7: Unless you have some sort of hand impairment, motion controls on Metroid Prime 3 work pretty flawlessly if you do the movements the game asks you to do. Also, the footage you show with the Plasma Beam soldering is either played wrong on purpouse or you got a monkey to play it.
How unbelievably good is this guy! Great doc. Love the idea. Love the execution
Just wanna say, i think you should make "fresh paint of coat" into a running joke, like put it in every video from now on or something
I absolutely LOVE your channel!! Once I am in a little bit better spot financially (selling a house) I will ABSOLUTELY be signing up on patreon!!!Your documentaries are second to none sir.
I love Super Metroid’s map. I don’t think a game needs to give you all the information at a glance, because experimentation is a part of the game that I enjoy. Being more detailed might save a bit of time, but takes away from the intrigue that comes with exploration.
