The PS5 continues to sell much faster than the Xbox Series X in 2024, with an industry analyst predicting its sales could be almost five times that of its nearest rival!
When it comes to home consoles which can play the latest AAA games, you’ve got the choice between PlayStation and Xbox. And while the specs between the PS5 and Series X are similar, one has been considerably more popular.

PS5 Pulls Away From Xbox in Sales
Despite falling short of its lofty sales target, Sony sold 20.8 million consoles in the past year. This is for the period from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024.
In the final quarter of this period, from January 1 to March 31, 2024, 4.5 million PS5 consoles were sold.
While Xbox has not announced its hardware sales over the past year, a trusted industry analyst for Niko Partners, Daniel Ahmad, claims that it is just a fraction of Sony’s console sales.
In fact, Ahmad believes that the PS5 has sold “almost 5x” the amount of Xbox Series X/S in 2024. This would put the total Xbox sales so far this year at somewhere between 800,000 and 900,000 units.
While the console sales may not be looking good for Xbox, the business itself continues to grow. Despite dwindling console sales, Xbox reported a huge revenue increase last quarter.
Additionally, Microsoft has big plans for the future of gaming. Development on the next-gen Xbox is already “moving full speed ahead”, so expect the company to hit back in the next console generation!
