I saw it today…it was AWESOME! Totally exceeded my expectations.
Is this going to be on Prime Video?
I'm not a fan when trailers use the punchlines and ruin the jokes you'd like to find humor in when watching a movie.
Same goes for all the action scenes. I feel like I've seen all the good parts already.
Holga is a barbarian from the Uthgard elk tribe, the npc character sheet doesn't have rage because as an npc you don't want to have the DM to track modifiers or advantages. There is no kua-toa, or fish person, its a huge fish from the scene presenting Xenk Yander but there are interacting dragonborn & npc tabaxis on that same scene (Without counting the demihumans on the revel end absolution council) I got to see the movie on monday, It's great fun, doesnt feel like its trying to match all of the mechanics and more interested in making an entertaining experience for everyone, its accessible to all. If you're a ttrpg dnd fan there are definitely fan servicey easter eggs all over the place, from young rust monsters roaming the tunnels of neverwinter to the 80s cartoon characters on non speaking roles being one of the parties at the high sun games but none of it is required to enjoy its plot. Around the middle of the movie, it all turns to a non spot frenetic heist that changes direction as things go right or wrong, at that point it's very much intended as pure movie entertainment. There are things here and there that happen conveniently, like the hither tither staff, or a choice at the end that feels a little mustache twirly from a big bad, but it doesn't take away from its pace. CGI in general is good, Themberchauds whole scene is greatly done, there are great choreographed fights but the last scene is where the budget shows. There are definitely bits here and there that falter, some of the owlbear shots, for example, but i was surprised at how well animatronics & practical effects worked (Except for the tabaxis, they looked a bit out of place and more akin to labyrinth or dark crystal muppets). The script is well written, it shifts between adventure heist & comedy but makes it work. I liked how It's not just a good dnd movie, it's a good movie in general. We had the good fortune of being invited to another screening by paramount over on LA, with a Q&A session with directors and actors. What would you think is a good question to poise to them?
I have my tickets for Sunday at 2PM. The twins and I can't wait!
This will be a win if it is better than the TV shows; Wheel of Time and Willow.
Going to see it this weekend. I was cautiously optimistic a month ago. The reviews coming in are by far positive.
Only spellcasting classes are designated in NPC stat blocks. See the Call of The Netherdeep module where rival party members Maggie and Irvan don't have classes assigned, for example. Holga is 100% a barbarian.
I super appreciate this, but word for the wise. You could have put subtitles on for more info as the trailers go.
That portal spell seemed to act like dimension door…
i think the RT score reflects "percent of reviews that were favorable" vs metacritic is "degree of favorability" so if I'm right (may not be) right now by both sites, 9 out of 10 people think it's a 7.6/10. sorry I'm bored. but yeah, how RT shows a binary symbol by each review, whereas metacritic has a 1-100 for each. cheers thanks for the video
Thanks for the tip. Got my early tickets! Indeed, this should be fun.
Honestly from the preview it looks kind of dumb. Like the idiocy of the writing and constant jokes will make it hard to really get into the story. I expect this to be on the level of a marvel or Michael Bay or JJ Abrams movie. Sexy but unwatchable. Really bummed that holywood contracts these dedicated fanbases to hack writers who know nothing about the source material and just write a string of cliché scenes. Hope I am wrong but probably not.
Not gonna lie, the rules and mechanics nerd in me is kinda gitty at the fact that the maze is composed of 5×5 squares. Enough room for one creature to pass through. it’s weird but exciting to be able to see the mechanics in as “real time” as it can be.
I was excited until I heard the filmmakers are interviewed by.. I forget the magazine, but apparently they straight up said they enjoy emasculating the lead men because it's fresh and funny to do so. -_- Sounds like the guys are going to be morons and the ladies super competent..
So, in regards to Holga and Forge not being listed with their classes, I noticed that it's only the two totally martial characters that aren't listed with their class. They definitely have abilities that would indicate them being a Barbarian and a Rogue (the Marketing even says as much) but I hadn't seen anyone make that point: everyone else is either a Full/Half- Caster [01:11 and 08:33]. What does it mean? Maybe it has something to do with them needing to be classified as such for requirements for magic items? Some new design in anticipation of OneD&D rules changes? Idk exactly but thought I'd point it out 🙂
I went ahead and got early access tickets. I truly hope that this movie will be good so that it can bring new players to the game
Holga is a barbarian, according to promotional material. The stat block for her doesn't have the Rage feature for some reason, but it does have other barbarian features such as Unarmored Defense and Reckless Attack.
the thing that looks like magic missile. looks more like to me twin spelled ice dagger.
Because Holga has an NPC statblock it doesn't say any class (only for casters it mentions the class, because it matters for scrolls techincally), but she does have Unarmoured Defense (Con) and Reckless [Attack], so she's obviously designed as a Barbarian.
Got my early tickets. Can't wait for Sunday!!!
In the latest trailer, I was thrilled to see the gang from the old animated D&D series make a live action cameo. It was not only a nice nod to the old series, but also to the Brazilian car commercials from 2019.
Ted: "turns out she's not a barbarian". trailer: "BARBARIAN".
Would have paid to see the film – then the OGL incident occurred now ill wait for the film to be on tv for free.
#openogl #ORC #projectblackflag
I'm not expecting a fantastic film, but I AM expecting a fun film, and honestly that's what's important to me.
Between the ogl, Kyle brink saying certain people can’t leave d&d fast enough, and the directors admitting that they love making the male characters the butt of the joke I have no reason to support this film
The score for now is only from critics, they are meaningless. Wait for reviews from public.
13:49 my AD&D 1E campaign, in its 82nd week, isn’t shenanigans filled or low stakes. The PCs have faced 17 system shock checks or die within those 82 sessions and there is NO RESURRECTION in my campaign short of a full Wish spell.
My players have also learned that their characters’ actions and inactions have consequences both good and bad. The world keeps moving forward, whether they interact with it or not and they are very conscientious about maintaining a good reputation.
This movie does not reflect the ideal of game play in my opinion. It is mediocre, and even childish. Might be good for 12-14 year olds, by 15 or older a much more serious heroic fantasy adventure should be the goal.
They removed all references of race & class from stat blocks because you can’t recreate any of these characters using the 5E rules. The also, the stat blocks are Monster Stat blocks, not player characters because they all have D8 for hit dice.
Well I'm glad we are back to giving hasbro all our money keep up the good work
If you can't play the trailers due to music. Then watch them before you record. If there is anything noteworthy write down the timestamp.
Don't spend 9 minutes during a video trying to scrub through to find something new, while also feeling like you need to commentate over it. It means that you do neither well, and you come off as very grumpy.
I’m going to wait for the reviews before seeing this movie. I was excited about this until I heard the creators say they “emasculated all of the male characters”. The way Chris Pine’s character was treated in the trailers rubbed me the wrong way but I assumed that was just a few jokes cherry picked from the movie. If it’s like that through the whole movie, it’s going to be really irritating. We’ll see. I’m still hopeful that the movie will be good.
I’m not sure about it but I’ll probably watch it
Why did they keep going with the Led Zeppelin song about buttstuff?
Definitely gonna see this movie. I just don't get how 'whole lotta love' even fits in and it's all you hear in all of the trailers.
In advanced ticket sales, at my local Regal Cinema, only 1 seat has been reserved for the opening (3-30 thru 4-2) after looking at every showing (including matinee showings). This movie is going to be a turd.
