That difference between outdoor and indoors is complete nonsense. It's American statistics throwing outdoor cats and stray cats into one statistical basket!
I understand why people do it, but I’ve always been firmly against outdoor cats. I take my cat outside on a harness, but cats are one of the most destructive and most invasive species in the world; they destroy native wildlife populations because they’re such great hunters.
Hi – contrarian here! There were a few points you missed regarding having kitties go outside. First of all, they don’t come home because they’re hungry…the world is full of animals they will attack, kill and eat. They come home because they love their humans and they see inside as a safe place to rest/sleep. I had 6 cats and 3 dogs when living in Florida…all lived outside, having a covered porch with a doggie door to the back yard. All lived in loving harmony, and they regularly slept with the dogs. In later years I moved to Georgia and adopted 4 month-old brother/sister kitties. They lived on the patio exclusively with a doggie dog to the outside world…they ran and played and would come back inside the patio and relax/sleep/eat. When it thunder stormed I created a tent over the 2 chairs so they had a place to hide. They lived like this for 6 years…then we moved to western NY and they became indoor kitties…they acted like they always lived inside! They used a litter box and never scratched the furniture or jumped on tables cause they continued to have access to the outside world from day one. We had two Adirondack chairs on the porch that they hung out on most of the time. They were saavy about cars and were shy around other people. They loved going outside and scratching the tree trunks, run in the yard, then come back in when they wanted to rest/relax in safety. They liked going outside at night and only very occasionally didn’t come back in before bedtime…we would always find them sitting in the chairs in the morning, waiting to come in. They lived to 15 and 17 years old. We just adopted new brother/sister kittens who will be introduced to the outdoors in a few months. Our new house has a platform on the second landing…we plan on making a ladder they can climb and have a doggie door installed in the door leading outside, and we’ll put two chairs on the platform so they can view the big wide world safely. You don’t give cats enough credit…they are literally wild animals who have adapted to living with humans, but they’re not really different from lions, tigers and other felines (there’s a special right now on Netflix called “Inside The Mind of a Cat”…check it out). Keeping cats inside a house and believing they’re happy just looking out a window is cruel…it’s the equivalent of keeping a bird in a cage to keep it safe. Keeping a cat exclusively indoors because you’re afraid they may get hurt is the same as keeping a child home and never let them leave the house because you fear what may happen to them. The most loving thing a human can do for their kitty is to allow them the freedom to be a kitty…and offer them a loving home with delicious food and vaccines to keep them safe. Does this work for someone who lives in a city? No. But if you live in a suburban/rural setting then the motto should be “live and let live”.
I had an old cat that loved going on walks with a harness but I would bring a stroller for when he got tired and we would walk to the frozen yogurt shop everyday together
It’s interesting learning bout cats. I never had a cat. I’m always scared of cats
I'm ASTONISHED at how stupid you think cats are. They are SO adaptable & great survivors!! All my cats have been primarily outdoors because of family allergies, and in my Louisiana neighborhood, they are SURROUNDED by a carpet of toxic pine needles, ivy, azaleas, bulb plants in everyone's yard in the spring, etc. … NEVER ONCE have my dozen cat babies gotten sick off a plant. Even though — over the years — I've seen all of them chewing on random stuff in the yard. You say cats are smarter than dogs, but then you contradict yourself by thinking they can't figure out what's good for them in the natural world. If that were true, I submit that the feral cats would NOT HAVE an overpopulation problem. They would have died off from eating poison plants long ago
Hi I have an indoor/outdoor cat. He likes going on his walk in our neighbourhood then will come in and stay a bit indoor. In summer he stays outdoor in our garden and will come in only when he’s hungry but winter he’s most of the time indoor and will nip out only to do his business then come back. Now I’ll be getting a second cat who is completely indoor. He used to be a stray but since being fostered by my sister he’s had to be indoor and use litter tray and has to be supervised when he’s out in the garden. My worry is how can I manage with 1 cat who’ll use the cat flap when he needs to go out and the other who has to be strictly indoor. I’m worried he’ll escape through the cat flap and I can’t really lock it as the other cat needs access to it 😓 Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance 🙏
Cats do not belong outside. They murder wildlife, if you want them outside bring a leash. They cause extinctions, don’t believe me? Do your own research. If you cannot care for your cat enough to take it on walks you shouldn’t have one. Even if your cat does not often bring back mice and birds it can still be killing them
I feed my cat sardines is this OK, he looks good.
Indoor only with my cats!!
nobody here talking about outdoor cats harming local wildlife?
this is especially important if there are endangered/vulnerable species in the area.
cats kill all sorts of critters, including destroying nests and killing nestlings, almost always out of instinct and/or "for fun" (they don't need these prey items for nutrition). there are youtube videos out there of outdoor cat owners who put gopros on their cats and are gruesomely horrified by what their sweet pets have been doing out there. there are also many peer-reviewed studies about the impact of domesticated cats on local wildlife.
and that is all on top of the numerous risks for the cats themselves out there.
Me and my partner love wildlife too much to have an outdoor cat.
My cat used to go inside the cars that’s why I had no option to keep her inside
"…only 2% of cats that are not microchipped that are lost comes home.."
Oh my! I lost my cat for almost 3 weeks. She was my first one and she was indoor – outdoor.
I did all that I can to find her, and I found her 4 kilometers away from home.
I consider myself lucky for finding my cat. She's been indoors since I found her.
Nice post Jackson
I adopted a stray cat who has lived her entire life outside. Shes very young but wants to always go out but always comes back. I’m not sure if I should keep her inside or keep letting her out as I found her outside to begin with, any suggestions?
I live in an island that cars are not allowed, only motorbikes, my house though is connected to only one road and that road only leads to my house. we have a garden kinda all around the house and some chickens on an area that has wooden fence. i think i live in a cat's paradise 😆
I would like to add that indoor cats can suffer from depression and become overweight because of lack of exercise.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WONDERFUL WORK!!!!!!!
Indoor / Outdoor cat highly depends on where you live! Also highly depends if your cat is a traveler .
Allot of the adult strays i feed at work are atleast 7 yrs old…..
Edit:
It's where i rescued my kitty and albeit doing everything i can possibly, he seems to have strong wild instincts and maybe it's his breed but he needs about 3-5 times more constant stimulation than most cats. We are like besties at this point but i also hate to see him miserable, even for a moment so i'm being stressed atm 😢
I feed the squirrels (not much else to look at unless they visit), pay for a drop in sitter on work days and play session with him.
Harness trained him and have been taking to yard whuch he seems to be super stimulated by but w/o fail, he always tries to escape harness by a dark ditch on side of building. I've been wondering if he's trying to escape me. He leaps out of carrier and starts the walk but insists on going into that ditch whether or not it means escaping harness and thats when i end the walk 😢
I don't feel as "selfish"….i just want him to be happy. He's 7 months old and I'm getting him neutered soon.
My cat is obsessed with going outside, I rescued him as skin and bones stray dumped at an apartment complex.
He always comes back but I haven’t wanted to let him out in our new house because of the busy street.
He refuses to wear a harness.
He has SO MUCH CAT TV.
He does not want to be in the catio, he is smart enough to know it’s not the same.
He has now resorted to spite peeing by the windows in his favorite spots ever since I discovered his escape route and closed it
is there any way you could make a video about transitioning an outdoor cats to indoors with the least havoc? i've been seriously trying for years to keep my cat inside, but he really pitches a fit that i would be fine to wait through until he gets used to it, but i live with family who gets fed up and let's him out anyway. i've gotten to the point where he's inside at night but that's it, and i'm so terrified every minute he's outside!
My outdoor cat (in a quiet street in the UK) lived to 23yrs! I now live on a main road so my 2 cats are indoor cats so I am not against indoor cats.
There are also working cats., just like cattle dogs.
These cats are meant to be outside and are more commonly known as barn cats or simply working cats who maintain yards from voles and moles and rats etc. These cats mostly always live and have great lives. Please make a video on this for the “nasty people” who dont understand this and try to steal these cats and make them indoor.
My prior no home maybe ? rescue loves my apt and catio now – catio is key so cats can get fresh air and sunshine and autonomy safely. I built one around my apt front door- it’s a great safe option.
INDOOR FOR LIFE!
Thank you Jackson !
My son just adopted a lovely 2 year old cat. His fiance and him plan on letting her out soon. She lived as a stray cat then got into a shelter and foster.
This is their first cat . They are both busy people and i worry the cat will be forced to be outside for long hours during the winter..
I really fail to see why people adopt a pet then let it out where anything can happen to it.
I worry but i am only the grandmother..😢
My cat is strictly indoors.i live by a busy road. He ran away when i adopted a puppy and those were the worst 24 hours of my life.
I feel to let a cat out is like leaving a 2 year ols child all alone.
Cats are helpless against cars other cata dogs cruel people weather etc.
My son lives in a country that encourages letting the cat out but they are also a very alienated unfriendly cold nation.
I really dont understand why they make you promise to let the cat outdoors as a condition for adopting .
Swiss rigidity is really unbelievable.
I couldnt adopt a cat there..
Fortunately i moved back home and found a tiger tabby kitten stuck in a car one day so
No one is going to tell me how to raise my cat!
I see my cat as my child since i found him at around one month old.
We are currently at war so that is one more reason not to let the cat out .
I tried to take him to the bomb shelter but he refused to go into a carrier..so he stays home ..
He watches birds and the dog chases him or plays hide and seek so they get along and keep eachother happy
we have an indoor cat and he's very happy and we haven't run into any medical issues with him yet! me and my stepdad play with him all the time and let him hunt with toy fishing ropes and stuff, and he's safe and sound indoors since the area i live in has gators and snakes 😀
I've got two cats that has been living outside for most of their lives. Farm cats but without the farm animals, I've just lived in the middle of the woods and we always had cats to keep mice at bay.
They have slept in my barn and rarely ever go inside the house nowadays, however they are as "tame" as others indoor cats and they seem to enjoy my company still 😛
Now I'm moving into an apartment and the only option I have is to have them as indoor cats.
Hoping the transition will go well but they are about 9 years old (neutered and sterilized siblings) so maybe they are ready to have some retirement chill-time indoors.
Watching from kenya as a 1st time cat befriender coz of my allergies. Our cat is an indoor/outdoor mix with a strong lean to the outdoors. Where we live has a low traffic & a solid enough parameter that she shouldn't be able to get outside the gates. I thought this was enough to make her outings safe. But snakes. We live the the city & I often fall into the false sense of security that the snakes around are non-venomous but she was recently bit by one that she killed. 😟 the venom is not deadly but it's a cytotoxin that does a lot of tissue damage & we're still on her healing journey. Bless her. I hope it doesn't leave any lasting damage to her. 💔
To me personally it feels abusive to not let a animal outside. I can go outside. Dogs can go outside. Imagine some higher form of life came down and kept you in your house forever and you never learned anything of the world beyond it.
