I worked SO hard to do every single side quest with Tifa just to open the door and see….Red sitting there to take me on a date because I just couldn't be mean to the cute lil doggy. Guess I'm a furry now.

The plot twist that you were in the game is amazing.

Pretty sure by now after letting the story melt a bit: Zack is dead. What he experiences is an aspect of the lifestream, his dreams and desires to reunite with Aerith. Cloud can experience it becasue of his insane mako poisoning. So can Tifa by the end of the game (she experinces the same "timeline" flash when running towards Aeriths body and seeing both blood and no blood).
Cloud suffered mako poisioning, so severe that he by all accounts should have died but for some reason he was able to temporarily drag himself to Midgar after the chock of seing Zack die temporarily brought him to "some" form of sanity until collapsing and was more or less a black robe or moments away from becomming one untill by pure chance Tifa ran into him and her presence made him wake up, but still with his fake SOLDIER persona, because Tifa was under the impression that he was a SOLDIER.
His mako poisioning allows him to see into the Lifestream, were Zack is taking care of Aerith and Clouds bodies…. Because Aerith needed those bodies to make the switch with the materia and she knows Zack would take care of them in that "timeline" (aspect of the afterlife) because as she is dead, she is aware of what happend to him and from her perspective other than Cloud, he's the only man she knows that is both able and willing to help her without question. Notice how Cloud and Aerith wake up in the exact same positions Zack had placed them in?
The "world" Zack experiences is of "omni-Aeriths" making. Memories of how her home was just before she got captured by Shinra in Remake, which is why Marlene is there. And Marlene got Aeriths memories as they touched in Remake. It's sort of been hinted that Marlene too is part Cetra, maybe not as pureblooded as Aerith who is half Cetra, but still. She could sense Aerith at the end of OG FFVII as the lifestream came aswell.
Back to Zack being dead = He only materialises next to Cloud after Aerith has been killed. That's when she could rebuild him and place him onto the path of helping Cloud.
While i would love for Zack and Aerith to get to live i just don't think they will. If the "worlds" are real then i'm sure a version of Aerith and Zack will get to live, but not together with Cloud and the gang. Maybe not even together on the same world either….
