If you like theoretical physics, you can find the full three hour conversation by clicking the little link that says “Adam Brown – Mining Black Holes…” next to the play button overlayed on top of the video (under my username, above the title for the short).
This explanation of space elevators is just a small part of a much larger point that Adam is making about the (im)possibility of mining energy from black holes.
Adam is brilliant and I had a lot of fun talking with him!!
Coming to store near you next Summer😂😂😂
Who's NOT getting in one of these?
Helium my dude
We don't have a material strong enough for earth yet. But we can make a standard design for mars place several on Mars. Same design will work on Titan and all the moons of gas Giants Earth's moon and cool side of mercury. An orbital solar power station at top of tether and rocket fuel can be made on Mars surface. Automated tankers go to Jupiter dangle umbilical that pumps hydrogen into hold flys back to mars space elevator pumps hydrogen down. On surface hydrogen combined with mars atmospheric CO2 to make methane fuel.other tankers travel from Mars to earth moon with fuel. If a space elevator were built on earth top of mount everest is a good choice at 29,000 feet short to orbit and above weather systems. Space elevator with a single design mass produced used on moons across star system on Mars titan and mercury. Ceres asteroid etc. Tickets to mas never need to land dock refueling off load cargo and passengers. Pick up cargo and people travel back to earth
Why not use an Air tight large flexible tube that sends pods up and down with air pressure from point a to b
If the tube flexes or bends a bit then it'll be like riding a water slide tube
What you need is an army of cloned Chuck Norrises linking arms. Only that would be strong enough.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Sky hooks/elevators are physically impossible. Even Carbon nanotubes cannot do it. Maybe one day we come up with something 10 – 100x stronger but until then, its a few people at a time riding atop the tip of thousands of kgs of fuel.
How to we keep the weight of the space elevator from pulling the space station back down to Earth? Wouldnt the parts within our atmosphere being affected by gravity pull the station down until it was also affected by gravity?
Industrial cannabis 'Hemp' bast hemicellulose fiber is a multi layered nano fiber best source of graphene
so, tell me why none of you 80 IQ fans of populist oligarchic shits like Trump, Musk etc are into carbon fibre bussiness?
You do not shit money when you dont abuse people, remember that, trash.
Meh.. just use Elytra and a bunch of Fireworks ..
Some people over think everything
The alternative could be a orbital ring placed at low Earth orbit and attach a space tether. Don't have to worry about needing any super-materials or orbital debris, and you'll have far more attachment points so more locations can use the same system.
Problems would be in the construction of the thing, if something "cuts the cord" of the space tether from the ring, and if something breaks the ring itself.
Spider’s silk.
Hey, how about we just don’t do this
Physics Dr. Strange
theres too much space debris and trash already getting to the point that they have to move sattelites whenever one is gonna get hit soon it wont be possible to launch anything out because of that
There's a material that will solve this problem: transparent aluminum.
How’s the elevator repair man going to get to it if it breaks down?
And this is just one issue of many. It doesn’t even touch on the issue of thermal expansion/embrittling or the sheer amount of material required to build such a structure. Nano materials are great for research, but very hard to produce on large scale because as you scale up materials the rate of defects increases.
"Get help" I'm good….
Why wouldn’t titanium mixed with carbon fibre work?!
