Chill everyone. The owlbear thing… is just a house rule made by the screenwriters. There’s nothing more d&d than house rules
Shapechange is a Druid spell at lv17(lv9magic) on 5e. So she can shift at will and back for the duration. So… it is allowed, just that is a high level druid (at least 17th)
If you say "it is not wildshape", well… neither its said on the trailer…
And, it looks exactly like wildshaping… it has a similar description… and it is a problem for people because they asume it is Wildshape… but just because theres so much few people that play high leveled campaing and they dont see other 9thlv spell other than wish, meteor swarp or wish again
And again: nowhere on the trailer it is said this is a wildshape. And we see the tiefling doing some other spells like a dimensiondoor stuff, so we know she does have other spells
I still don’t get why people love 5e so much. 3.5 (and Pathfinder) are so much better. Obviously 4e was a total trainwreck. The concentration mechanic in 5e ruins it for me, that and bounded accuracy.
You missed a version. Which, given that you said you started in 3.5, doesn't surprise me.
Back in the 1970's-80's, D&D and AD&D were technically two different games. AD&D is the one that's routinely referred to as "first edition" now, while D&D is often called OD&D (O for "original"), or sometimes BECMI (an acronym for the boxed set names – Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, Immortal).
So you actually missed the original version of D&D that came before the version that we now call "first edition". That's where owlbears were first introduced. Of course, druids didn't exist yet in that version…
Just give her a magic item that allows it and a throwaway line in the movie. Simple. Done.

It may not be strictly legal but I wouldn't put it past a DM to allow a higher level Druid or at least a Moon Druid to allow Owlbear. It's not like it breaks the game anymore than what other classes can do with certain combos. Fun comes first.
