Dogs experience a form of mourning when another dog in the household dies

I had three bluetick hounds mixed with tree tick hounds and the mama dog passed away leaving her son and daughter behind and now they're so depressed and morning they're different their personalities are different they are very sad and down can anyone tell me how long that may last

My puppy big brother just passed yesterday and he watched me treat his brother while dying from parvo and now he is just extremely sad, not eating, just putting his head down 😢

Thank u for your great advices@ the mother of my dog(she was 4 and and the one who left behind is 2 now) is very sad. We lost her mother 3 days ago! Do you think it will help if we bring at home a new puppy? Will this change her mood and help her to make a new friend and new company?

They miss their physical presence, but just like you, the handshake of consciousness imprints both ways. Its engramatic in nature. You will imperceptively feel your dog is still around. Human consciousness is amazing, even to other Earthlings. Certainly dogs are fascinated by it.
You are like them, but not like them; and if you have an especially strong connection with your dog, they soak up everything like a sponges, even language.

I had two dogs, until yesterday morning. While both dogs are strongly connected to me. My girl whom passed away was probably more so. Its not about favourites, its about connection. She was younger than him by about 4 – 5mths. Both over 12yrs old already. I'd met him beforr her, but he came to me after her. Its a long story, involving a rescue of a dog I would've had in the first place.

He does miss her. He sat by and watched as we buried her in the cool Earth. This dog can never sit still for long, but he was fascinated. – Did he know she passed away? I'd say yes. The hallway door was open, and when I awoke with only one dog in my face. I got up to see where she was, and she had passed away. Perhaps a few hours earlier. That night she insistently pushed herself in my arms for a chest rub she finds soothing. Spooked my mind, but otherwise there was nothing about her that was abnormal. I'm quite sure my boy was with her. Its easy to feel guilty you were not.

She was a runt you see, whom died at birth, and had to be brought back to life by massaging her chest. A special one whom lived like nature spirit. I was deeply connected to her and still mentally see her everywhere. Runts don't usually live long, but nothing phased her. She was very perceptive.

Did my boy show signs of mourning? No, not until very recently. However, he's had a day doing the usual stuff with me. They both come with me everywhere normally, and he certainly wouldn't miss a moment. I do feel like he's missing her though. I just hope he doesn't get any ideas. He is 13yrs now.

The human mind is a wonderful thing. Strong connections imprint engramatically in our consciousness and can be recalled. Ghosts, I suppose. I don't mean to imply "its all in the mind"; but that perhaps we aren't fully aware of the propensity of consciousness. The more we understand it, I suspect, the less we'll feel the need to induce connection artificially. I'm sure dogs aren't far off. They just store and process residual information, differently.

we had to put my baby girl Missy last Thurs . our other 2, a yorki-zu and a part St Bernard …."good dog" lol. thats what I tell people when they ask what she is …"a good dog:". since we lost Missy, she has just like, not interested in playing, and more of a "please hold me, and pet me" vibe. the boy, he hangs out on the bed with Piper, and sleeps alot. but he is starting to act like himself. she, Piper, seems lost. she is eating good but she isnt her same nutty self. she will come up to me and lay beside me, and breath deep, with almost a wimper when she does this. I tell her its ok, I know babygirl. its like she is confused, and sad all the time. I try to get her to play, grabbing her leg or her tail usually gets her riled up, but she just looks up at me, and her eyes look like she is about to cry. 2 weeks before Missy got real bad, (she was 17 1/2 ) Piper would "groom" her, and clean her. and now that Missy is gone, she cant seem to get it rite in her mind that she has gone away. my heart is still on the mend, and I try to help her feel better, or help her understand, but its like that song, "how can I help you to say good buy?" I started singing that to her the other day when she started the wimpering, and her eyes were wet like she had been crying. this has been hell on us all. but she is taking it the worst.

We just had to take my older dog to the vet to be put down. She was dying before our eyes on the way there. When we returned my other dog who is 2 wont look at me or react to me and just wants to sleep . I dont know how she knows
