That is a man😱
Thank u Laura. I thought about installing Steam OS on my laptop but after watching it video, hell no cuz it seems like it's too much work for me as the legally blind gamer to do. Plus I don't know Linux at all. So I'm not that guy to mess around with something I know nothing about lol. Thank u Laura, for being there and for caring about us the disabled gamer that wants to be treated at normal. Thank u beautiful
I wish I could put the xbox magnifier in EVERY OTHER CONSOLE! It's been around for a while now, so why does everyone else get away with doing so much less to their magnifier solutions. Please Steam, make the inbuilt magnifier good. Let me zoom in reeeeeeally far.
By the way, thanks for the awesome video, Laura! Yours is the only review I've found so far, and it's very thorough.
Oof … I was seriously interested in this thing, but worried about the accessibility. That they only bothered putting in a magnifying tool that has one zoom level … … … Long story short, I won't be getting one any time soon, because it seems they didn't give ANY thought to low vision accessibility.
Even the switch, which I think is the lightest on LV accessibility of the big 3, has a solid magnifier tool that's actually my favorite to use of the 3. I couldn't play handheld without it, so obviously won't be able to use the Steam Deck. Also, no screen reader? really? While I have enough vision to play games, I still much prefer navigating systems with a screen reader, and it's been my one gripe with my Switch because there is none. Even my PS4 has a basic one, even if it's far from perfect. Microsoft Narrator is the console gold standard.
Trying to cobble in Linux accessibility apps and stick them on the Steam game mode screen sounds horrific, meaning no shortcuts in game or anything. No thanks!
It's unfortunate that Valve didn't ship SteamOS with the screen reader installed. Orca does not have a Flatpak or AppImage release and can thus not be installed on the Steam Deck without unlocking developer mode and refraining from updating, since that would overwrite the system changes. Basically, although the system is capable of running a screen reader, it doesn't have the software to do so. I hope Valve will consider adding it in a future update.
Thank you for this, Laura! This is one very necessary part of Steam Deck coverage that has been sorely overlooked
Thank you so much for this! Flashing problems, the one hazard of mine 😢 Probably gonna have to cancel my reservation if thats not changed
You can remap all your controls on a per-game basis with Steam Input. All you have to do when in game is press the Steam button, navigate all the way to the right where it shows your controls, select "controller settings", then select "edit layout". Steam Input is probably the most extensive control remapping software out there and has been a feature on Steam since 2015. I highly recommend you check it out. NerdNest has a great video showing how you can customize the trackpads too.
Does it support any kind of redshift/night mode? Eyestrain has been a problem for me with switch and I was hoping steamdeck would be different and at least have an option. But you said no color changing options for color blindness, so it sounds like redshift is also out?
I hope some people from Valve are checking out this video, there are some pretty good suggestions here to improve accessibility (also on PC in general)!
Thanks this is really helpful information 😃
Thank you for this ongoing series. Besides filling a largely-unaddressed need for accessibility discussion in all the hype surrounding the release of the Steam Deck, I found this video more informative than a dozen others insisting the Deck is either the best thing or the worst thing ever.
How is the weight/feel compared to the Switch?
I get fatigued with my Switch + Satisfye grip, so anything much heavier is a no-go.
I wasn’t planning on getting the Steam Deck and now I DEFINITELY won’t be getting it. Thanks for making my decision even easier.
Very in-depth explanation, great work.
These are all great features that the steam deck would be greatly improved to have and I hope do implement!
Well it looks like the steam deck is not for me still. But maybe in the future a year from now maybe will be! Thank you for the video
Laura, thank you so much for this video! ❤ I found your experienced take on what the Steam Deck is (and isn't) to be invaluable. I don't believe your review would even inhibit sales, but actually gives prospective buyers a more well informed view into their current decision 😊
Thank you for this video. This is really interesting.
Thanks for this. Getting my Steam Deck soon and was interested in hearing about its accessibility options.
Isn't it time to address publishers for game support instead of always refering to linux if a game is not working? I mean, for them it's just the last mile and more a thing of will. Valve did a ton of work for game publishers having as less as effort as possible for beeing compatible.
Awesome video, Laura! Thank you for looking into all of these potential issues for disabled people.
I have a joint disorder and have been worried about the weight of the Steam Deck (for reference, I can only hold my iPad Pro for a couple of minutes)
Thank you for continuing your amazing work on bringing the needs of disabled gamers to light.
