GTA VI has been delayed until 2026 but now has an actual release date

Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed until May 26, 2026. The highly-anticipated sequel had been slated to launch this fall, but developer Rockstar Games says it needs more time to deliver the “level of quality” players expect.

If you’re in the business of silver linings, the news at least provides developers wary of clashing with the franchise juggernaut a firm release date to plan around. 

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game,” said the company in a statement.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

Grand Theft Auto is one of the most successful franchises in video game history, with GTA V alone shifting over 210 million units worldwide since launching in 2013.

Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive had been teasing the launch of GTA VI for some time and eventually dropped the first trailer for the long-awaited sequel in December 2023.

Take-Two attempts to reassure investors after GTA VI delay

Take-Two repeatedly insisted that GTA VI would launch in 2025. In its Q3 fiscal report published in February 2025, the company described GTA VI as a “groundbreaking release” capable of creating an “inflection point.”

In an update to investors shared earlier today, Take-Two said it still expects to achieve sequential increases (and record levels of) net bookings during FY 2026 and 2027 despite the delay.

The company added that Rockstar has its full support in pushing back the release date.

“We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations,” said Take-Two chairman and CEO, Strauss Zelnick.

“While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence. As we continue to release our phenomenal pipeline, we expect to deliver a multi-year period of growth in our business and enhanced value for our shareholders.”
