The Callisto Protocol has recieved A ton of bug fixes, and A new game+ since I've made this review. Just A heads up for anyone interested In the game.
4:30 "… by throwing them into the spiked walls, which will also take forever, since it has no upgrades, because of how I chose to play the game. This is terrible design, …"
It is not bad design for a game to not support certain playstyles. By nature, a challenge requires some playstyles to be better than others. If you choose not to use or invest in one of the most powerful abilities in a game, then you can only blame yourself.
Judging by your upgrade state at 6:35, you have seriously disregarded the grp ability. To me, that is almost similar to choose not to use any guns in a first person shooter.
The grp ability is also which makes combat with multiple enemies "work". This game is realistic in the sense that you cannot expect to defeat multiple enemies in melee combat. By using the GRP, weapons, the melee heavy attack, the environment etc you can create distance between you and enemies.
It seems plain arrogant to call a game design terrible when you are not even engaging in it meaningfully, seemingly by choice.
I had this game pre-ordered and despite many negative reviews I decided to still pick it up…and its been pissing me off. The combat is so awkward & repetitive & DOESN'T work with 3 or more enemies. The dodge system was never built to sustain the player with multiple enemies because enemies can knock you out of your dodge, forcing you to take damage and even die. Its NOT fun, its frustrating. The game's bosses are sponges for damage, yet they can (& will) insta-kill you. And they spawn regular enemies that sneak up behind you, causing damage which opens you up for the bosses to insta-kill you. This is NOT fun, its frustrating.
The levels are bland & linear, which while they look nice all look the same. The problem is that there are occasional branching paths, one is the main route & the other might contain items. But the game doesn't tell which is which and so many times I take the main path and when I hit a save icon I know I went the wrong way and so I turn around to try & back-track but the game locks the door I came through and since the game saved I can't re-load from a save, meaning I miss out. Again, its super frustrating.
The inventory is so limited, but the game has an upgrade system where you need to collect credits to pay for upgrades and you can find items in the environment to sell for credits, but since you have such limited inventory you often have to decide do you want those items to sell for credits or health or ammo? No matter what you decide, you end up screwing yourself. Again, this is NOT fun, its frustrating. A new-game + mode would solve this problem as you could potentially re-play with expanded inventory & pick up all those items you missed & sell them and upgrade more weapons & gear, but NOPE, there is No NG+. WTF?!
The game brags about being horror & scary but its NOT scary. I haven't even flinched with any of the jump scares, NONE! The forced melee combat forces you to get into the face of the enemies & is too frustrating and sucks ALL the fun & scares out. The environments are so repetitive that it takes away from the horror elements. The story is so barebones & lackluster that I stopped caring about what happens, which again if you can't keep me interested then I'm NOT going to get scared.
The game is just a prime example of a good idea that is marred by terrible decisions that destroy all that is good. Its maybe 3 good things (graphics, setting & plot, and voice acting) that are marred by a dozen negatives (terrible melee, terrible save system, terrible boss mechanics, bland enemies & environments, poor inventory management system, lack of scares, lackluster story, lack of NG+ at launch, sequel-bait ending, poor performance & glitches, terrible dodge mechanics, etc). I regret buying this game.
Solid video mr Jared
I want to buy this game and I don't, can't explain it lmao
The environment looks cool. Everything else was kind of a miss in my opinion from watching gameplay. I watched some day 1 game play on the PC port and it was ridiculous with frame drops and stuttering.
Did you enjoy The Callisto Protocol?
