In the matter of JFK, I simply thought there was a conspiracy because it looked like he was being shot from the front. That was all. I didn't have any particular hatred of the government or anything like that. But then technology caught up. Yes, it IS possible to be hit from behind and your head snap backward in the direction of the bullet (of course don't forget he was wearing that back brace which probably contributed to the snap). But I was convinced of Oswald's guilt when I saw a simple image of him. He didn't looked scared or confused – he simply looked crazy and disturbed. So yes, it was possible that someone as bigger-than-life than JFK CAN be taken out by a simple good-for-nothing disturbed human being. But I for one was never really into conspiracy theories, so when 9/11 happened, I was not one of the people who immediately screamed THE GOVERNMENT. All evidence shows it was 20 or so Al-quada members and nothing more. No. The most suckered in I felt I was was in my early teens and believed there was a big 9 foot Hairy Ape-like creature roaming the woods of Northern California, Washington, and Oregon. But hey, I grew out of that.

It seems that we have either people who believe every conspiracy theory that comes along, or people who reject every conspiracy theory that comes along. OK so you acknowledge that there are some conspiracy facts such as Watergate and MK ultra dolling out acid to unsuspecting victims. But on the other hand, to believe that every single (would-be) assassin is a "lone nut" who is not working in conjunction with anybody else is also hard to believe. The Lincoln conspiracy being an exception. In the case of JFK, I'm satisfied that Oswald was the only shooter, but until the files re: the relationship between Oswald and the CIA are released in 2029, I find it hard to believe that there was no conspiracy behind the JFK assassination.
What's more, even if it was proven that there were other snipers at the grassy Knoll? (GK) It still would not prove a conspiracy since it was broadcast by the newspapers exactly where and when Kennedy would be passing by. It could very well have been two separate assassination parties who never knew each other. It's just that Oswald beat the GK shooter(s) to the punch.
The phenomenon where the brain tends to believe everything it is told, including lies, can be understood through several psychological and neurological concepts:

Desire for Meaning: Humans have a strong desire to make sense of the world. When presented with simple explanations or narratives, even if they are false, people might believe them to avoid the discomfort of uncertainty.
Understanding these mechanisms helps explain why people sometimes believe lies and false information, highlighting the complex interplay between cognitive processes, brain functions, social influences, and emotional factors.
First, define conspiracy, then theories. There's your answer
The question would rather be: why do so many people laugh off facts as "conspiracy theories"?

I was a 911 truther for a week. Then I watched debunking videos about 911 conspiracy and felt like an idiot after. Makes tons of sense when the gaps are explained. Never again trusting or following a conspiracy theory. Always listen to the debunking side.

Why we believe in conspiracy theories? because it’s easier.
This is exactly backwards. Conspiracy theories do not make people less likely to believe the intelligentsia. It is the complete disenfranchisement of the people by the intelligentsia that makes them lack trust in them and turn to conspiracy theories for answers as to why they can never seem to win. You have zero influence over people who don’t believe you value them and feel no connection with you. When people feel heard, they feel loved. And when they feel loved by someone, they trust that someone.

Pattern recognition is innate in humans, but some people excel at detecting and interpreting them better than others. For ex. pattern recognition is often used to come up with a hypothesis, predict an outcome and later confirm it via evidence. I would say conspiracy theorists that lack discernment are bad at it. Hence the correlation causation fallacy.
Its a hassle when they believe it without valid proof and jump from one subject to other subjects but the most frustrating things is when they start to have anxiety or panick shopping even to the extent they spent lots of money base on that belief it will hv a negative effect on they daily life
There is a conspiracy “pattern” – a group of angry children telling you not to believe anything Mommy, or Daddy tell you because they weren't honest growing up and the establishment never protected them. If they say round, we say flat, If they say moon we say buffoon, if they say masks, we say no, if they say peace, let’s just go.

Theory doesn't mean false or a fascade. It stays a Theory until the herd majority realize it's true, then in becomes a fact. And instead of ridiculing the peoples saying it's truth the flock start ridiculing the people who continue denying it.. but when they accepted it as true didn't make it the truth, it was still true even when NO-ONE was speaking it.
As a mathematician, I've got pretty crazy pattern perception. At the best of times, bathroom tiles are kinda trippy. When I'm deep in research mode, faults in brick walls seem to have patterns. I'm so glad my parents raised me with decent critical thinking because otherwise, I'd be a complete wingnut. As it is, I just see patterns in my friends' behaviours and convince myself they hate me, lol.
The conspiracy theorists are often right: WMDs, Tonkin Gulf, Gain of Function research in Wuhan, Hunter Biden laptop, Clinton campaign planting the Russia Collusion hoax… I could go on. So why do I believe conspiracies occur? For one think, power is sufficiently centralized for it to be possible. For another, it's a matter of meticulously examining the facts. There's plenty of evidence, for example, that catastrophic anthropogenic global warming is a much overblown crisis. These conspiracies must be examined on a case by case basis. When someone automatically rejects a theory as a "conspiracy theory", leaving it at that, that person hasn't given it due consideration.

I think he hit the nail on the head with our human need for "certainty". We don't like not knowing something. We think we should be capable of understanding everything. When we run up against that brick wall of "not knowing", we just make something up we can all agree on. Sometimes that's a conspiracy theory, sometimes it's just doctrine like the earth is the center of the universe and everything revolves around it (including the sun). Or for that matter, what happens after death? We can't know, so we create all manor of religions that claim to have the answer. For me, it's all the same spectrum and all the variation is just different frequencies along the same arc.
