Back in 2013, I was working at Rockstar Games during the final crunch before the release of Grand Theft Auto V. I wasn’t in the spotlight — not a lead developer or anything — but I was part of the QA (Quality Assurance) and testing team in their San Diego office. We were the people who played the game for hours on end, trying to break it, trigger bugs, and flag anything that would affect gameplay.
It was intense — 12-hour shifts, sometimes overnight, testing every tiny piece of the map, from how pedestrians react when you honk at them in Vinewood to whether vehicles would explode under specific physics conditions. I got to know Los Santos better than I knew my own neighborhood.
What made it wild, though, was that around the same time, I overheard early talks and saw whiteboard sketches for what would eventually become GTA VI. They were just starting to plan it while we were still polishing V. Nothing concrete, but the word “Vice” came up a lot — we all assumed it meant a return to Vice City, and turns out we weren’t wrong.
Fast forward to now, and I’ve kept up with a few folks still on the inside. I won’t name names — I don’t want to get anyone in trouble — but the scale of GTA VI is unlike anything they’ve ever done. I’ve heard about dynamic weather systems that affect gameplay in real time — like full-on hurricanes that can flood parts of the map and force players to change their routes. The AI is apparently crazy smart too; NPCs remember you and interact differently depending on your actions throughout the story.
There’s even a rumored co-op story mode where you can switch between characters with a friend, not just solo like in V. Rockstar’s been really secretive, but they’ve put nearly a decade into this game. From what I’ve heard — and seen glimpses of — it’s going to blow minds.
