Not common enough imo, Sekiro won GOTY over Control, Death Stranding, & RE2R. Also, I personally think Elden Ring will win "Player's choice" GOTY, meanwhile the corporate media will pick GOWR instead. Same thing with 2020, although for a very different controversy, between GOT Vs TLOU2.
I mean for player's choice GOTY, it's just basic math really. Players in other main platforms except PS4/PS5 will choose Elden Ring, meanwhile at the very least half of Sony fans will choose Elden Ring over GOWR. 2021 GOTY is all the evidence we need. Nobody would picked It Takes Two as GOTY, purely a media's choice. Meanwhile, Halo Infinite won Player's Choice easily.
2021 was such underwhelming year too tbh. If CP2077 actually released in a very polished state, it would have easily won GOTY (Player's choice too), best RPG, best narrative, best art direction, & best Music & Score. Such a wasted potentials LOL
Its definitely not a 10/10 and its definitely not game of the year 🤷🏽♂️ its an 8/10
story was really underwhelming. the writing seemed to just forget what it's building up to and the whole ragnorak part is like how CW makes super hero shows… there is not that sense of the grand end of the world type in it which was present in the God of war 3 ( in terms of music action and scale )…….the difference in directing is definitely more noticeable as the first game had a sense of scale even though it didn't have massive boss fights……the twists become more obvious and the foreshadowings in the story constantly beat you over the head……also wait till for half of the game to not play as kratos and on that half you have the most awful underwhelming mechanics……. think about how epic spartan rage is now replace that with assassins creed 3 DLC powers that conners had………….also don't forget a big cast of side characters where you don't give a shit about but they drag along the whole story

I could pull out my PS4 Pro and play it, but I would say I do wish it was on PC. I guess if it is that good I will force myself to pull out my PS4 Pro to play it, so we'll see.
I will never understand how narrative is more important than gameplay in games. That is just idiotic to me. I will probably never play god of war again. Maybe once again in 2 years. It doesn't have replay whatsoever. Same as 2018
