There is undeniably a lot to love about God of War Ragnarok but while playing it I couldn't help but feel disappointed.
I do try and give a balanced view here though, so let me know what you think?!
For me, personally, I felt like they rushed the story esp towards the second half. There were some story elements that made me always question, 'Why?'. They didn't explore the Great Serpent all too much, neither, apart from that one scene where Loki revives that snake. That's it! The whole fkn idea was so cool… The Great Serpent remembers Kratos and Loki but that relationship isn't even explored or expanded upon! We only see the Snake fight Thor in the end and that's it… I also didn't like how Brok found out about Tyr. It felt forced and out of nowhere. They tried to be clever for the sake of being clever. Also, the whole rallying up different realms to march against Asgard just felt so rushed. I didn't feel it at all. It's not like in Mass Effect 3 where you truly, truly feel the weight and responsibility of it all. And when Kratos fights Thor and Odin in the same gotdamn area lmao so non climactic. I think this game had so much potential! But it just failed storytelling wise… It did have it's moments, but moments aren't enough for a great and consistent story.
odin is weak!
tyr supposed to be a fighter but in this game is a weak character, " i was hoping to fight him"
loki was an aesir not a jotun!
few huge beasts to fight with button combination like GOW 3 !
many Gods was omitted!
baldr was son of Frigg and not freya ! even though late they were mistaken one to another
i guess the only way to save the saga and avoid losing players money is made the third part game in which odin get free maybe thanks to tyr help ? and with a big fight with a strong warrior appearence of both odin and tyr. and dont forget to show other Gods.
Sigh disappointing game. Even the gameplay is disappointing they went threesteps forward and then 3 steps back. Removing mechanics, executions, executioners cleave and many others. Kratos felt alot weaker in this gameplay wise. The story of course fell short
I don't like playing as Atreus.
2018 Set up Ragnarok lovely but Eric Williams didn't follow Cory Balrog's blueprint.
For those who defend this and say it's a masterpiece I should tell you (( pls play God of war 3 and compare these 2games. )) if you say this is better…. I don't know what to say
My biggest gripes with the game were:
•Atreus sections were long and boring. I like Atreus for story reasons but I don't care about playing any characters other than Kratos, especially when their sections are completely unfun.
•Story was alright, but seemed to not be a lot of solid direction or purpose to a lot of story elements. Example Tyr adds pretty much nothing of consequence even though you spend hours searching for him and talking about him.
•General exploration did not feel as intriguing as the first game, I think just the world design was maybe less open and more linear.
•Boss fights were meh. I'm all for character development but not getting to kill Thor was disappointing, not fighting Tyr was dissapointing, Odin fight was kinda lame. Expected a little more epic scenes etc from boss battles.
Overall a decent game but it's not a 10/10 like the first. I'd give it a solid 8.
Are we going to talk about the weapons we got? Who else wanted to get weapons in this “epic” apocalyptic war of gods? I’m the only one who wanted to play with Thor hammer? Sure, they’ve gave us a spear, but bro, we all expected that hammer, and older weapons like blade of Olympus to make a comeback, such a wasted opportunity
I remember the kratos model they showed for ragnarok and he looked more muscular and athletic, to my disappointment they reused the model and made it even rougher and slower, and christoper judge's lines I'm sorry to say but they lowered the level too much with less intensity and more off ..
Negative points compared to gow 2018 (personal opinion)
-the conflict with freya
-the characteristic personality of kratos was almost eliminated from the game and we only do things that the other secondary characters send you to do
-The combat was improved but it got worse in many aspects such as that you can be attacked when you cast a spell and that some enemies keep attacking after casting a normal combo
-The introduction is great but after Thor's fight against Kratos the game slows down a lot in continuing the same intensity of the plot
-ragnarok is a disappointment
-until the animation of gow 2018 when freya hits the floor with the chisel to save baldur is better done than when surtr gives the first sword blow
-After the fight with Thor and when Freya forgives you, the game becomes extremely anticlimactic.
-playing with atreus is disgusting
-the facial expressions are disastrous they wanted to copy tlou's and they only make kratos look like an angry old man
-killing odin feels like nothing because there is no real argumentative weight to feel hatred towards him (gow 2018 presented us with someone twisted who always fulfilled his plans and his wishes)
-Atreus's dialogues went from being interesting to just saying "champion jotnar" for most of the game.
for me gow 2018 was more epic, consistent and with more essence of gow than ragnarok,
3:17 is what broke this review for me, you literally put there lmao….. gow 3 came out 12 years and it was fucking phenomenal but you should’ve knows ever since gow 2018 was announced back in 2016 is that ship sailed.
Game wasn't bad just super disappointing, they should have never made kratos this old and i honestly can't see him being the main character going forward and no one will buy atreus's games so this might be the end for this franchise, lame af
There’s many parts of the game that feel like strong bullet points and lots of copy and paste. I was disappointed that the story was limited, gameplay was Nerf from the fist one and characters were not given enough development time. Often just omitting them from the story.
Oh man, I'm only 21 years old, I definetely shouldn't be feeling this old, but the old god of war games were so much hype, and now all I can do is look at the past and look how god of war was great and how its gone now.
I mean if you look at the old games and see the adventures of Kratos, you can notice that Kratos had one HELL of a fun trip, all while seeing these cool scenarious and mythological creatures, I was a kid back then and I was never so hyped by a game to that scale.
Perhaps if they make a reboot by killing Atreus and making Kratos younger it could potentially bring my boi back, by at this point, I dount it'll ever happen. Gow is dead
Lol the mini bosses and collecting dope armour is better than the story
Kratos: "Keep your expectations low and you will never be disappointed."
15 hours into the game and I’m giving it up. For all the flashy graphics and presentation it feels dated. I feel like I was walking along a corridor for most of the time. There’s no player agency.
I'm I the only one who doesn't like these emotional movie like scenes. I thinks it's way overdone
This game was written by a Disney director.
God of War: Ragnarök has an incredibly well written story and great gameplay. Despite it’s shortcomings, it still is the best God of War game.
am I the only person that thinks it's a huge disappointment that you can only play as atreus in asgard and then it get destroyed like wtf
Scorn must be a masterpiece for you
Beautiful graphics, but an overall disappointment. Boring, tedious gameplay that completely lost the fun, brutal combat of the originals. The story in the 2018 intro was far more enticing, with Balder as a great recurring enemy. This story disappointed completely, with Thor being hardly the threat he was laid out to be in the first. The characters, except Heimdall, boring, poorly written. Final Ragnorok itself was just more of the same boring gameplay and bad story writing.
Disney talking squirrel…talking ghost ravens…jelly like enemies..
The raiders are cardboard cut outs that disappear when you kill them, pointless cannon fodder..enemies are generally lesser quality than 2018..
Story has a lot of shmaltz..puzzlesare annoying…you clip through the whale…not as good as the first one..but I havent gotten too far into it..because I just cant work up the enthusiasm..played the last of us part 2 instead…
A much better game despite bad reviews.
70 quid..Robbed.smh.
Felt the video ✌🏽
Bro for me it’s the gods that were the bad part. How, why, and what is the point of introducing weaker gods? This was a chance to get a look at new, dangerous, and powerful gods. But no. All the gods we fought got completely and utterly destroyed. Magni died on his first appearance and Modi got bullied the whole first game. Baldur always got bodied, Thor stopped fighting TWICE, Heimdall was the biggest letdown of the century and Odin TBF was ok. I just wish he put up more of a fight. But dude, these gods of this realm sucked dude. What kind of bad guys were they? They didn’t even do anything. The most damage they did was when Baldur and Kratos broke the gate. And when killing Baldur started Fimblewinter. THATS IT…LITERALLY. You can’t sit there and tell me Kratos didn’t cruise right through these people. That is why I’m disappointed in this game. Can you imagine if Kratos just manages to kill all the Egyptian gods JUST because “he’s Kratos”? That is so lame dude.
During my playthrough half of the game I was already doubting the game, and how much padding and shitty map design the game has, it feels so primitive, they oversimplified the "arena" like sections of the game, hell GoW 1 2&3 did this waaay way better.
Santa Monica played this one safe and went to the Disney route of story telling, GoW lost it's balls.
Game is a 7.5/10
childish as fuck
why ragnarok is bad
extremely underwhelming story, all major kills are stolen, for example: thor, odin, gna.
combat has you buying skills, and finding runics you acquired in the last game (not really a new experience there) multiple songs from previous title used in this NEW game, gmgow difficulty is much more forgiving, normal enemies are used as boss fights, hateful is literally just berserkers with large health bars, 70 dollar base price for ps5 players, haptic feedback is lackluster, armor sets lackluster, no new game plus on launch, multiple instances of emersion breaking dialogue, for example: odin referring to freya as his ex. way too much dry humor, playing as atreus is extremely uninteresting especially when angraboda comes around, brok dies, the whole game was leaked a week before it dropped, it won’t be receiving game of the year. conclusion: ragnarok is a 20 hour long hand holding simulator, kratos has been reduced from god killer to a whiny mother that’s trying to bubble wrap her child from war. elden ring offers a much more expansive experience with much more to do for less and i don’t even like elden ring, but yeah i would agree ragnarok is a new experience however, it certainly isn’t a great one. but hey, like kratos said, if you keep your expectations low you will never be disappointed 🤷♂️
Was way too easy on give me good of war
Ragnarok is the most disappointing sequel in GOW. The one thing I care to mention that has me fed up with this series is Kratos’ “holding back” bullshit. I agreed with Thor in wanting to see the real God of War and felt one of the the games focus was going to revolve around Kratos finally giving in. I mean, he is facing Thor and Odin. Why hold back against these two gods of such power?
I’m breaking up with GOW. 😂😭
This game made me just want to get story out of the way so i can focus on everything else cause at least then i can actually play the game and not have walking talking simulator.

God of War Chest Opener… I started skipping all chest cause I was tired of them.
