I rescued a dog 7 days ago the first 2 1/2 days I was with him round the clock morning and night. I started to get him to go into a crate on the 3rd day, he’s been great since. Ive taken baby steps to leaving him alone and he wont have it. Ive had neighbors complain. I do everything trainers recommend. I don’t say goodbye or hello when i come back. Ive stopped him from following me from room to room, I stopped that by day 3. I dont close the door to the crate only when I’m leaving. I dont do the typical routine grab the keys put on shoes grab coat and bag and go. I have my keys in my jacket already, i do it randomly even if it’s just to stand right outside my door. Ive tried the Kong filled w food, I’ve tried bully sticks, white noise, doggie cartoons, doggie music for anxiety. Ive made sure my dog sees me leave just to stand in my hallway for 5 seconds and i come right back in I’ve done that dozens of times. He’s not having any of it. I’ve invested in a camera so i can watch him. I have been a prisoner in my apartment for 7 days and feel like it’s going to give me a nervous breakdown. Also to note i average between 5-6 miles everyday thats our 3 walks everyday so it’s not like he hasn’t gotten enough exercise. When I have left to test how long I can stay away he will bark, wail, howl and whimper consistently the whole time.
Today i ran to Starbucks it must have been while he was in a deep sleep because i managed to go and come back as soon as he woke up i tried to get some laundry done in the laundry room behind my building and he barked non stop. Im at a loss i dont want to return him but i may have to as i work a full time job and have to go back in a few days. I am going back to the rescue tomorrow where i got him to try medication. Ive even bought a thunder jacket im hoping to get delivered tomorrow. It has sucked all the joy out of this experience. You try to do something good by rescuing a dog and i cant help but feel like I’m getting punished in return.
My dog is okay without me I just don’t want her to eat anything, have accident or hurt herself.
I'm seeing separation anxiety more when I take my older pup away from the house, usually for a walk, and my puppy will go crazy until we get back. I'm at a loss on how to help this anxious attachment she has to my other pup since theyre both more nervous pups. I've never dealt with a dog attached so much to another dog in the home. Most I have been doing is trying to make it consistent so its not being ignored, and then when I come home, I wiat to enter until she is quiet, but I don't know what else to do to address such specific separation anxiety
I literally can’t leave her home with out feeling like she’s going to destroy the flooring 😫 let’s try this out starting today .
Crates are illegal where I live (Sweden)
Very good
U r the best !! Tysm ❤
Just came across your video and man you definitely help me out man I couldn’t even step outside or even be lay in my bed without my puppy making a big scene but definitely the tip of playing with her and burning off all that energy definitely helped…thanks a lot for the tips
My dog (a Malinois) doesn't even have a crate and she has no problem when I leave her alone the whole day. From the first day, she learned to understand that when she smells after shave and sees me putting on my office clothes, I'm going to work. She then walks to the door and goes outside into her kennel. When I come home, she's all excited but I act as if I'm not, I don't say a word. She wants to jump on me, but she refrains herself always in the last split second. PS when she was young I used to take her on long walks beforehand, but it was I who got handicapped in both leggs and can't do it anymore. Anyway, she's got a lot of outdoor space to live herself out.
Lab puupies are very loyal..that is tge problem..
tip 3 is genius! my dog is so tuned to what i am doing when im about to leave, i never thought of it that way!
I retired early to stay home with my old beagle. Could not get him through it. It gave me almost 3 years home with him 24/7. I miss him so much. Now, I have a little papillon. I'm trying to prevent this with him.
Great advice! ❤thanks!
If you have to be gone for 8 hours, what age is suitable to start doing this and would a play pen inside be a suitable alternative? So there not left in a crate for 8 hours?
Also, At what age and how long can you start leaving your puppy outside whilst at work for 8hrs?
I thought crates were cruel, but your vids have given me clarity and understanding. My 10 week lab, has been crate trained for 2 weeks now There is no night issues, no seperation issues and the housebreaking has been a dream. Thank you so much to your videos and expertise. My Bodhi and i thank you. Happy puppy, happy life ❤
So i cannot come home and wait for my dog to be in a calm, desensitized faze…he a yr old hyper pom…and pees everywhere the second he gets out of the crate. I need to take him out immediately! So what should I do now? Hes been peeing and pooping everywhere!
Hi Will, always great tips from you and you make it sound so easy. I live alone, work for myself with quite a lot of free time and have a 12 week old puppy. Because I work from home I'm around a lot. I'm very active and (used to pre-puppy) go on long walks daily. My puppy has a lot of energy, but hates the lead and just attacks it. She's a little better on a harness because of the attachment location, but still refuses to actually walk, but I think she really need tiring out and her not walking is not helping to get the best from her, the other thing is how in the early days do I as a single person go shopping or even take a shower without her destroying everything and screaming – Crate training is fine, I get it, but it takes time to get there , I don't want to bundle her into a crate and give her issues with it so I've held off while I spend time trying to get her acclimated but in the meantime I still have life things to do (she hates me even washing up or cooking and will take the opportunity to No1 or No2 in the house for attention) but I have to eat too, and I have to go shopping etc. as we all do, and I don't have a partner to tag team with so its tough. Any suggestions?
Why does my dog potty in the house when i leave him.
im guilty of all that you said. leaving him in the am i explain mommy is going to work and what time ill be home this worked for 3 years now he barks all day marks in the house whimpers scratches and licks all day as well. the only time he is calm is when i give him belly rubs… i know i created this monster is it to late for me??
when i come home after work i walk thru the door and the only thing that gets him out of my way is saying mommy has to pee, then he runs to the BR waits for me to sit the jumps on my lap and is sooooooooo aggressive with the kisses the it hurts,it feels like a piranha is kissing me
I was wondering if one of those playpen (I think that is what they are called in English) is also a good idea?
For anyone who might see this: The only thing
I DO NOT agree with in this video is "ignoring your dog" when you come home. That is not natural AT ALL!!
The first thing a mother or father wolf does when entering their "home area" is ACKNOWLEDGE their family! They do this with their noses, body language, and it can even be a bit "playful".
Balance is key to everything in life. Yes, it's not good to "over do it". Getting over emotional is not natural either. But your dog's natural instincts is that you would be happy to see him when you get home, and that he is one of the most important things, if not THE MOST important in your home. If you ignore him, that could cause confusion, sadness, and eventually depression. Every dog is different.
I know i'm slightly late to the party here but really struggling to get my 9 week puppy to settle when left in the crate. She is comfortable with the crate and will take herself off to sleep in the crate but if she is left in it whilst awake, even for 20 seconds or so she will start crying and doesn't let up. We have tried putting her in the with kongs and lick mats but to no avail, she will only stop crying at the sight of me. What should i do to help get her comfortable being in her crate when awake?
None of this works. Take my dog on a 3 mile walk when she was used to a quarter mile, i have her kennel trained, and i dont make a fuss when i leave or get home. But she still slams her head against the kennel and sometimes busts her face open to get out and tear shit up when im not home
Thanks
I would never leave my dog alone in my house without putting him in a cage I know he is crazy 🤪 as hell 👹 when I am not around he really loves 💕 me like a psycho 🫠
I have a 14 week old puppy which i got over a week ago. He is like my shadow. I spend lots of time in the garden with him so he gets used to it. I am trying to teach him to stay in the garden when im at work but he just cries and doesnt stop. I walked him , got him tired then we we got home placed him outside and went inside. I closed the curtain so he doesn’t see me. Only 10minutes but he wouldn’t stop crying.
