Great review bro!
Honestly couldve been better, the fighting is lacking the gotham doesnt feel like gotham (it feels too bright not just neon bright just the city itself) i like the new puzzle mechanics and batcycle but without the batcycle the traversal couldve been better. its a 6/10
They fucked themselves over by repeating Arkham Knight's fatal mistake and put zero villains in the main story outside of the court, who were very underwhelming, and the league (where's Ras?). The main story needed 4-5 additional villains included in there such as Deathstroke, Bane, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow and Joker. The game needed an additional 4-5 side story villains rather than moronic NPC filler missions. With such limited villains, you'd think they had 2 years to work on this game. Nope, they had 5 1/2. Development went horribly and this is the product we got. I still like this game a lot, but I can totally see why many were underwhelmed.
Enjoyed many aspects of the game but I feel like the game just lacks in content overall. The fact the only villains present are the Court, Clayface, Harley, Mr. Freeze and the other secret faction in the game is just insane to me. It just feels like there isn't much to do once you beat the game.
Gotham Knights can definitely be fun at times, but overall its definitely lacking in a lot of areas. To me it feels like this game was definitely going to be a Marvels Avengers clone at one point, but the reception of that game definitely sent the team back to the drawing board.
While Paul Dini didn't return for Arkham Knight, he did write Asylum & City.
So hearing many people say story was disappointing, it does make me wonder if it would have fared a lot better if either Dini or any other good comic book writers came in to develop the story for WBM.
As for gameplay, watching Salvage's reaction video to Batgirl's gliding he did couple of days ago, it makes me think they really should have kept some elements from Arkham as it was in Gotham Knights.
For instance with gliding, Batgirl's gliding is basically doing the same thing as Batman in the Arkham series, but for some reason, the devs completely redesigned the gliding, in a way that makes it janky, awkward & weird (compared to Arkham).
While combat, given they wanted to try something different, I can understand, but gliding given it serves the exact same function & purpose as Arkham, it was weird seeing them re-do it but in a much inferior version of it.
I think it's a shame.
Seen couple of youtubers who got to test the first couple of hours of GK saying WBM seem to be huge fans of Batman & DC in general, but despite that glowing enthusiasm it does feel like their studio seems to be a bit lost in terms of creative direction (whether it's the narrative and/or gameplay) compared to Rocksteady.
Currently playing it myself. Been mainly doing side stuff. And just defeated Clayface. The first fight anyway. I have been mostly enjoying it from what I played. It has some cool things going for it with the customization, and ability upgrades. But it is very flawed, and super repetitive. It can be extremely exhausting if you aimed to complete everything. It had so much more potential to be better then it turned out. Very much an average at best nothing super special type of experience. Gotham City is cool to explore, but oddly not enough depth variety. It’s a messy game for sure. Just all too generic. I am genuinely enjoying it, but overall I’m not blown away or wildly impressed. I agree with your points, but also never set my expectations for this to be an amazing game.
