At what age do you start the corrections? 6 months, 7? *?
Very helpful thank you!
Very good useful information
Any suggestions for an 8-9 week old puppy? And is a regular collar used? When do you start on a gentle leader?
This guy is just so freaking good.
Perfect timing for me to see this, my GSD just turned 4 months old. I've been following BDT since we got her, implementing each age-appropriate bit of training, and she's responding incredibly well. Easy, no drama, just mild corrections, consistency, and praise/treats. She's housebroken, no long nibbles, jumps, or licks.
I saw a trainer call this the “remember I exist” method. Working great with our 14 week Airedale.
Something I picked up on with my Shi tzu x poodle mix was the love for laying into the leash or harness. (I’m using a harness because my dog is susceptible to IVDD.) It’s amazing how much better she walks off leash than on. Constantly checking in with me and responding to commands so much faster. It’s like when she’s on her leash she feels like it doesn’t matter. I used the pop correction method until I was warned about it causing stress on her spine (incredibly long spine and short legs.) I decided since she is so small the imperfect leash training wasn’t as big of a deal to me as keeping her healthy. But she does really well all things considered

Hi! What should i do with my puppy just trying to eat rocks, sticks, leaves, grass and all that he finds on the ground that catches his interest? Great video and great content, +1 SUB. Thanks! 🙂
Why is it so hard to find your puppy videos😢
the step i was missing is to not let the leash be tight all the time. i thought she would get tired of having the collar be pulling against her neck but clearly i was wrong- my girl will keep straining until she's choking 😭
I have an 11 month old Australian Shepard who's well trained so far in the house and in our own yard where he listens well and stays by my side on and off leash, VERY attentive. But I'm struggling with walks away from the house, on the sidewalk, going someplace unfamiliar it's totally different. He smells every spot and blade of grass, totally distracted, pulling ahead or to the side. I keep the leash short and tug back when he pulls, I allow slack so he feels it's nicer if he doesn't pull, he's good for about 5 to 10 steps but then repeats it. I'll turn into him and make a figure 8 and he follows by my side, I'll walk the other way on a dime and he turns and follows, I keep him guessing by turning often to go back the other direction and he follows me, he looks up at me and follows, even senses me stopping and he stops just before the leash tugs, but again after 5 or 10 steps going forward again he's right back to pulling and doing what he wants, smelling the side of the sidewalk and pulling ahead. I just want him to slow down, relax and STAY consistent by my side. Is he too young? It's so frustrating. I know he can do it, he does it at home in the yard like a champ.
I need a video on my puppy attacking my feet and trying to bite legs on walks. Not walking isn't an option because apartments.
At what age do u start to give the dog a corection for leash pulling?
What is she jumps more when u giver her the knee?
Thank you sir! I tried doing the treat leading method and it killed my back until I saw your video. So much better!
The video made we feel so much better. My new puppy is not getting the leash very well. I guess i am expecting too much of him. I have two other well balanced dogs who seemed to have been really easy to leash train. came naturally to them. Thanks
I clap louder than that and say off and my dog doesn't flinch at all
I have tried the stop-and-wait method with the "pull" exactly like how you are doing this in a couple of the videos (yours) I watched. It takes forever to get down the block and I keep my patience together. However, my pup gets frustrated every time I stop and begins to bite her lead. I don't pull back when she bites b/c I'm trying to take out the fun of the tug-of-war. Then she'll try to talk to me, so I grab her collar and walk 6-8 steps like I say in another video you made. She'll be good from one driveway to another and then go back to trying to walk me. She's a 5 1/2 month border and too smart for her britches. Please advise….
Just love your training videos helped me so much with my 4 month old mini poople she is very smart i use a harness she just started jumping on me an biteing leash dont no what started this as few days ago she walked great on leash, feels like retraining again guess not jus for her me too haha
Will this work for an 8 month old 70 pound pit bull ?
What is the opposite, when the puppy (4 month old BMD) sits/lays down and just doesn't want to follow? Treats works most of the time, but I don't want to be dependent on using treats all the time.
i feel so confident training with your videos. best trainer out there
I've watched quite a few different dog training videos and I like these best. I like that he has different expectations for pups, doesn't make treats the end goal for the dogs, and I've had real success with his methods. Thank you for putting these out for us to learn.
What to do if the puppy just wants to go home sits still and does not want to move even with treats?😂
It's hard to know what age to expect results when training puppies. My poodle is 4 months old. What age should I expect quality leash walking?
He says no corrections, then the human frustration kicks in and he corrects her unbelievable 🙄 man is a control freak even on an innocent puppy…..
😂😂😂 4:20
Wish I would’ve found these videos when I first got my puppy. I watched another popular guy with the slip leash, it would constantly go back on his neck, and they say to keep it behind the jawline but it wouldn’t stay(so frustrating)and I never could figure that thing out my puppy would literally choke himself and constantly pull, he still pulls some but our walks are so much better thanks Joel please make more small breed puppy videos
WOW!!! I tried this with my very strong 4 month old lab/pit mix and it’s WORKING!!! She needs constant reminders but that’s fine, I know she’s a puppy! I’m just happy she’s no longer threatening to pull my arm out of its socket! She’s even starting to respond to me when I call her away from stimuli. I’m floored. Thank you Joel!!!
too many treats give my pup diahrea 🙁
What do I do if when stopped my puppy just starts trying to eat and/or chew on rocks, grass, sticks, etc?
Wow, I'm impressed! Really like how this guy teaches. The best trainer I've seen on YouTube so far. Thanks all the way from Quebec City, Canada.
I used to do this same method on my puppy at 4.5 months when it was when I adopted him. It would take a lot to walk one block but he was doing pretty good until my dad started walking him and not correcting his pulls, frustrating when all the hard work just disintegrates. Now at 10 months I am using the leash walking correction methods.
Thank you so much for all your poppy videos! 😊 I love them!! We are bringing home a male Weimaraner poppy in about a month and your techniques will help a lot!!
Your videos are great help for me and my timid dog. Thanks!
Doodles rock!
Hello Joel – I just found you and your terrific videos and training style. I have a 22 pound Cavapoo, 1 year old that is a disaster on the leach. At what age is it ok to train smaller dogs with a collar rather than a harness? I’m afraid I learned too late that harnesses don’t provide any correction. Thanks for your help in advance. Pete from NY.
This is exactly what I was looking for Joel. Thank you. I was getting so frustrated with the “look at me” then give a treat on walks. I found that my pup only learned the cycle of how to get a treat with no improvement at all in the pulling. The release of pressure as a reward is also the foundation of horse training.
