Our fearful dog will occasionally be carried outside to go to the bathroom. Really not wanting to go and struggles with leashing etc. This would get frustrating for our other dog who was ready to go outside and would have pretty positive energy.
Now I walk them separately and make one wait but still a lot of hesitancy and leash resistance. Only to result with a short trip, back home and into a kennel. Am I the problem? She must feel like I'm not in charge and finally feels safe at home. This is also the case for the backyard. She refuses to go. I try to be patient. I don't have her confidence.
man, my dog is scared of parked bikes, the spatula for the BBQ, bags ect.. 10 month old boston terrier btw
I have a 20 month old collie thaht was rererd for sheep but never took to it she doesnt like the lead and no recall is there anything i can do she is scared i didi get a training lead but she doesnt take treats so difficult to know where to start
My dog is fearful of everything that can move. We adopted him from a shelter 6 years ago at age 1 1/2. His safe place is behind the couch and under the bed. He’s afraid of people, dogs, moving a trash bag or the bin, a piece of paper, clothing, etc. I’ve tried many of the things you mentioned and nothing has helped him. He is my best friend and I show no fear. He is loved tremendously and treated extremely well as if he’s our child. We don’t know how to help him and I truly think we just need to accept it. Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks for the video and advice.
Love seeing more awareness around dog anxiety. For anyone looking for natural solutions, I came across Dogio and their products actually worked for my pup. Worth a look!
Hey Tom. Came across your channel.
This may be premature but I have a 2.5 year old Cavi. She is definitely a beta. She’s scared of a lot of things. Not fear aggressive but very insecure. As a puppy she was alpha with my senior Boston terrier. But as she grew up she’s become skittish and lacks confidence. We recently got a Frenchton puppy. She’s 50/50 Boston and Frenchie. She’s very outgoing and isn’t fearful of much if anything. She’s trying to engage my Cavi but is clearly the Alpha already. My Cavi avoids her like the plague. My Cavi will skirt around the puppy. The Cavi is also very attached to me. When I try to pet both my Cavi will walk away. My Cavi will no longer touch a toys that my new puppy plays with. She sniffs them and walks away. She won’t go thru any doors unless the puppy goes first. It’s been about 2 days now so I know it’s new to everyone. I keep giving my Cavi reassurance and extra love but she’s just not a fan of the puppy at all.
Any tips and tricks to help her with this? I’m kind of letting them sort it out but will not tolerate aggressive behavior on either side which neither has shown but I also don’t want my cavi to be scared of the new puppy forever.
You mention exercise. My dog is obsessed with balls but I’ve noticed it’s become more of an unhealthy addiction rather than a fun tool for her and I want her to become more social with other dogs. How do I get her to exercise without a ball if she won’t play or run, just stare at me waiting for a ball. She’s been attacked several times as a puppy so there’s a lot of trauma there and unless I throw her a ball she’s pretty much glued to my leg. Thanks
Hi Tom, I have a 2 year old female doberman who suffers from high anxiety. Cannot concentrate or look me in the eye, terrified of traffic, big trucks, prams, skateboarders etc… she gets plenty of exercise 4 times a day but is always a nervous rack. I think it is genetics as I have had large dogs all my life. Any advice? I am thinking of medicating her,
I have been trying to figure out why my 5 year old lab is going thru this now? So thank you
Thank you for this video! I have a 9 year old English chocolate lab that is a fearful dog. We are not chaotic or loud. I think it might be genetics? Again, thank you for the video! We will try some of these pointers.
Such a helpful video, thank you! My 2 year old pup is definitely the genetic fearful type.
To get your dog to sit using only voice commands, start with a clear and consistent command word like "sit." Say the command in a firm but positive tone. Use your hand to guide your dog into the sitting position, then immediately praise them with lots of affection when they do it. Consistency and patience are key. Over time, your dog will associate the command with the action and the praise, even without treats.
My dog was attacked, at home, in your yard. Cant avoid that environment lol. She is now not cool with anybody new entering our home environment. What a nightmare.
My dog is fine with other dogs. My problem is when I take him for a walk he pulls to go back home if he hears a motorcycle, a plane or even a bird chirp. I need a way to take him on a decent walk so he can exercise.
What to do it my dog suddenly is afraid of everything? Fcking impossible to live anymore, everyday is extra nerves, and for fucking what….
I just adopted this 4 year old golden retriever from a owner that had to rehome them, she is sweet and calm good with my cat and my 3 year old and other dogs however she is very timid and not comfortable with new people, I’ve been taking her on walks daily getting her used to seeing other dogs out and people she still tucks her tail and really nervous, she acts as if she has been abused by her previous owner, she is very attached to me already but not my husband and gets mostly scared with males. Best advice on how to socialize and break this fear from a older dog? Can’t afford training course right now but I definitely want to help her! She is also scared of stairs, hardwood floors and I just broke her fear of getting in and out of the car however she also fears jumping in general. She’s got some fear to work with but so far she seems she can be broken out of it easily just want to know the best way to go about it since she is older
I have a purebred Belgian Malinois from a rescue that got pulled from a shelter (got him at 2, he’s now 3). He’s an anxious and skittish guy—I have no idea of his background but I I can tell he wasn’t socialized much and his genetics definitely suck lol. He’s low drive and a couch potato but I’m his entire world to to the point where I barely had to train his recall because he listens on the first time and I’ve literally called him off of rabbits and cats in ton the first try. We’ve done a lot of confidence building and I had to do counter conditioning training when I first got him because he was slightly reactive but now he’s fine. We’ve trained art hardware stores and any dog friendly place—he always does AMAZING with his trainings. It’s mainly just people and dogs being near him or trying to touch/sniff him that get him anxious but I’m okay with that because I always advocate for him that he’s nervous and needs space. I’m definitely at the best it’s gonna get with him but I’m okay with that because he’s never ever growled or snarled at anyone. He’s been attacked by small dogs and he wouldn’t even try to defend himself. He’s been in super uncomfortable situations like kids or people randomly petting him (when I’m not looking) and though he’s scared, he turns to me for safety. He literally doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. I love that he knows he can be safe with me. Genetics are such a huge influence on their temperament!! Also proof that pure bred ≠ well bred! On the other hand I also have a rescue Yorkie that’s a little menace. I trained him his basic obedience but he always puffs his chest out everywhere and acts like he owns the place 😂 he loves people and is dog neutral.

We just adopted a about 3 month old german shepherd and she is scared of everything. She has had zero exposure or only negative experiences with collars& leash, going outside, walking, even talking or barking. She is completely silent and doesn't know where to go to the bathroom or even if it ok to eat. She is such a sweetie and want to help her the best we can with these fears of hers. Any advice is appreciated.
Side note the breeders used clicker training but no actual training was happening. Zero explanation was given.
Thank you for the video. I have a fearful 4 year old german shepherd that I brought her home at 8 weeks. I have watched all kinds of Youtube videos about fearful dogs, took her training classes, etc but she is so insecure that she would not get on the car any more. If she does, she would not get off the car so it is very challenging especially when taking her to the vet. The causes I see are possible genetics and also lack of exposure to outside when she was a puppy. I thought about seeing a behaviorist but as you mention the problem is you do not know how long it will take for my dog to overcome/up to what grade she will be better to manage her fearful situations. From my understanding it is up to the dog and we owners basically need to be patient. I cannot afford to pay for a professional help if they can't tell me how long it will exactly take. Behavior modifications are expensive. I had to stop with obedience trainings I could take her when she was younger which she was kicked out because she was being aggressive towards other dogs and their owners. None of them understood dogs' fearfulness and did not want her in the classes for their dog's "safety," and they completely misunderstood fear aggression. Our bond is incredible. I am a very calm person and my house is quiet. She has two other siblings to play with at home. I am not asking you anything here. Just wanted to say there is an owner like myself and I appreciate your free videos.
Maybe I will get advice for SB here. I have a standard poodle male, 15 months old. I wouldn't say he is very fearful. He doesn't react to noises, even very loud and sudden; he sometimes runs to runners but recently is just a loop around them as we were working and still are on it. He sometimes barks at people at night, when they have their faces covered, or if someone is entering home (we live alone), so it may be guests. He never attacked anyone. He is the type of dog that, when off-leash sees another dog, he will turn around and wait for permission to go greet them (most of the time). In the forest, when walking the path in front of me, he will turn around every 50 meters to see if I'm there, and on a crossing, he will wait for me to show (gesture with my hand) where we are going. Have I made him too dependent on me? He stays home alone just fine. No distractions. He was in the mall at 5 months old, and while we were waiting, he would just lie down and observe. At the vet, if he is allowed to see that is going on, he just accepts it (needles included, but he needs to know what is being done to him). He rarely pulls; he knows his commands to take care of him, he is a perfect boy. But I feel like he is just too dependent on me. And that I have done it to him.
To the point- he avoids fights and another dog has to really get under his skin for him to even growl. If he dosn't know someone really well he may come up, sniff and retreat. I have noticed that he has hard time with playing with other dogs if there is a larger group (lets say more than 4-5 dogs even if he has known them for a long time) – he will just stand somewhere close to me and watch others play. The day I got him we walked around places with other dogs. I've let him decide if the wants to meet them or not but also when he was on a leash, and we were passing other dogs I thought him that he didn't have to come and sniff everyone. I have noticed that he would rather play with me (jump to toys, play with balls, etc.) than with other dogs. I have tried just not playing with him when there are other dogs around, but he just stays with me.
If there is a dog who barked at him in the past, he will not go anywhere near him (no aggression just barking) and will not play with other dogs. I takes him months to get over this. He dosn't run aways or anything but keeps his distant. He very rarely tries to dominate other males. To me he seams to have zero confidence in himself. I don't know if I have done sth wrong.
This is a group of dogs we meet almost every evening. Is it just him adulting and his character our should I be worried? btw. we prefers castrated dogs over bitch in heat. I can recall him in the second scenario but it can take me like 40 minutes to catch him if the is interested in a male castrated doggo. He just jumps around them and his brain shuts off.
My dogs did have both parents as street dogs, thank you for what you said, despite having found them at 3 days old my girl is very skittish and my boy is reactive to EVERYTHING when we walk. He also wasn’t able to be socialised properly as they spent the first year living in Barbados so weren’t able to be out and about when other people were. I am so glad I found your channel, I have been having a hard time with my boy because walking is really stressful.
My dog is pretty much perfect in every way. She’s obedient, she sits when I tell her stays when I tell her she’s been exposed to lots of people and lots of dogs. I’ve had her since she was a puppy. The only issue she has is when someone new comes up to her she cowards and urinates. Any advice?
I've adopted a stray dog from a shelter about a month ago. He's 4 yo, very polite, didn't took a sock out of place, or barked once. But he's afraid of his own shadow. At home, he is becoming more comfortable day by day, but going at the street is a hassle. He walks fine, doesn't react, but is alert 100% of the time, tail down and under. I've been trying to make longer walks, but still is 1 hour walking = 1 hour of panic for him, doesn't respond to name, commands, food, nothing. Today he sat for the first time and accepted some food. It'll be a long way. Only at the shelter he spent a whole year, very well kept but with no street contact and who knows what he endured in his past 😢
We can't even get the harness on our dog. He won't come near enough to us and if we try to put a leash or a harness on him. He runs and hides and sometimes tries to bite.
A lot of Dogs are afraid of me except the dogs in my house. Whenever I walk around the neighborhood, dogs will bark at me initially and then will runaway in fear… you know they have that different bark and the owner will tell me that he finds his dog weird that he is afraid of me… How can I remedy this?
Purina Calming Care Probiotic has a calming effect on fearful dogs, I've given it to dozens of dogs over the years, it's not a sedative.
it's for mental health
❤THANKS 👍
thanks for all
My dog was scared of a fallen tree branch
i have a puppy that needs social work but when he was a puppy parvo was very bad here so we only took him outside in our yard unless we carried him. i take him to lowes basspro and even walmart but only in like lawn and garden area no where near the food area. I think he might be bad genetics but his parents took a few minutes to walk up to people too…should have looked at that as a warning… but he is sooo cute lol
