What if the players that roleplay the characters in the movie ARE Critical Roll
I would like it to happen in the very last scene, or even an after credits scene…
Needs more Marlon Wayans
I can't believe The Princess Bride was officially referenced in relation to this movie because I've been saying to all my friends who play dnd that I hope it's similar to The Princess Bride! my ideal situation with the owlbear would be that the person playing the Druid is a new player (which would makes sense since she seems to be the new member of the group and they have to give her the lowdown on their past and stuff in the trailer) and earlier in the movie she sees an owlbear and makes a mental note of it (physical note in the real world) and pops it out during that fight scene because they don't realize that they can't turn into an owlbear as a druid. and I think that is where I would like a cut to the players explaining to them that they can't do that because of the rules and stuff, but the DM rules that this time they CAN do it because they want to reward the player for remembering that they can turn into animals that they've seen before, but they just didn't know the classification of the owlbear. I think it would be way cooler for this movie to represent the rule of cool and doing things that are the most fun for your players taking priority over what the actual rules say.
Maybe the Druid can turn into an Owlbear because of "magic"..💫💥🪄
Since this is based on a game we play, I would like to see at least one scene (or a couple) of the players at a table. This could be the hook that gets the movie fans interested enough to try playing the game. I also feel that the comic element in the film is a great link to the game, because, at least at all the tables I've been at, laughter and having fun is a key to why the game is so good.
I don’t think most people care. It’s basically a bear. No added special abilities. And I argue that she is a tiefling. So then it’s probably not a monstrosity and rather a natural creature in some outer plane/demi-plane.
Where did someone say the cast of CR would have a cameo? I have found where it is said that there would be one well known and well liked person doing a cameo. That by no means is the same as "The cast of CR"
I can't find where it is said. … so sad…
Lol… my DM just said… "you know what… F – it… druids can wildshape into owlbears if they meat the CR" cause that was cool.
This movie, like any movie/tv show/etc, will not be able to be all things to all people. It’s important to know that the writers/directors of this movie are fans and longtime players of D&D, and they have worked very closely with WOTC on a lot of the film.
Everyone, just take a breath and let this just exist without throwing dispersions over this or that, before we’ve ever seen the movie. I hope it’s a fun movie and that it brings more people to the table.
Also… I have no doubt that a few months before the movie, WOTC will announce a new manual that covers things from the movie with new subclasses/magic items/etc. New Druid subclass that can turn into monstrosities?
And I hope this movie does not go back & forth between realities, like The Princess Bride. That has been done and it stands alone as something great. Hoping for a ragtag group of blah-blah-blah, adventuring and entertaining us along the way 😊
No keep it in the world & build towards the ice wind dale trilogy! That’s the film everyone wants to see!
This movie just looks like fun
This movie is going to be epic period! Love it for what it is! They are going to have the 80’s cartoon characters! In the film as an apposing team!
You can If you are using polymerization!
It would be cool to see the cut outs like Princess Bride but I think it would bother too many people, think they need to keep it in universe to get more mass appeal
I like the idea of the cast being the active players at the table playing D&D & then the story begins with them as their characters.
I think it would be hilarious if they cut out of the game when the weekly session ends.
I would like a princess bride style movie, where this is a D&D group playing these characters. I think this would make it more of a D&D movie rather than just another simple fantasy movie. This would also allow other movies with different actors playing another group of players in the same world. Lots of possibilities.
Because of the owlbear I've come to the realization that I wouldn't want most people at my table, and people are bigger rule lawyers than they think
They are actually playing 5.5 edition in 2024 and druids can now wildshape into owl bears.
I'd love to see them do something like the Gamers movies and series
I keep hearing people call the druid a Tiefling but my first impression was wood elf. Am I off base to think of her as a wood elf?
A poll was taken in the main DnD Facebook group. 96% of the community is not bothered by the Owlbear.
Polymorph is a spell… Druids can take that spell…
i dunno it feels more like people are intentionally parodying themselves when it comes to the owlbear thing. Personally i have yet to see anyone actually cause a stir about it.
I've played D&D for 40 years, and I LOVE the Owlbear, and the transformation looks pretty darn cool too. That's all I've got to say. Great video!!
Oh, and for the naysayers out there… Would you be even remotely surprised if WotC doesn't put out a supplement after the movie for Druids becoming Owlbears (as well as other things).?
I would want to see this be a strictly in-universe story just to see it done. I feel like the frame story style is a bit of a crutch, but I also think it would be cool for it to do similarly to the Jumanji sequels where The Rock and Kevin Hart are video game avatars for people who got warped into the world.
If the frame story style can work for the narrative, then I'm all for it. But making too many D&D references might break immersion.
I'm here for the popcorn adventure flick.
I think some monstrosities like griffins and owlbears should be considered beast, it fits with the idea that in the multiverse animals could be vary different. One thing I miss is the idea of bizzar animals, should I just belive that all throughout the multiverse planets have the same fauna as earth? It doesn't make much sense.
Alternatively, what if Matt Mercer shows up as a God?
Are we positive that the Tiefling is a Druid using Wildshape? Maybe just a polymorph spell?
The more we attempt to shoe horn game rules onto a movie, the more of these hilarious vids we're gonna get. It's a good time to be a D&D-tuber as this content just pumps itself out. I personally hope the try to break as much of the RAW that we know in order to make an entertaining film. It's a movie, not an actual play stream, so just stop. This "edition war" angle is really strange to be tbh.
Thumbs Up!!!
For not joining the cliche “haters” club…wow, I didn’t even know there was a backlash about Druid/owlbear….I guess those nerds watch too many YouTube videos with titles like “You’re doing it wrong” or the content creator does a funny voice (well, he thinks it’s amusing…dipstick!), and makes fun of the character turning into an owlbear…
It’s a damn movie based on the D&D lore, one half of D&D is Homebrew, and if you don’t Homebrew – “You’re doing it wrong”!!! (Snap).
Anyway, BIG PROPS to you for siding with the defense “If someone wants to shapeshifter into an owlbear in my campaign, of course I’d let them”….that’s one of the most common sense responses I have heard in a while.
Poor haters, got no outlet to get paid for their frustration, so they feed off of like button amounts.
I remember a line in the 2000 film with Marlon Wayans as Snails; Justin Whalin's character makes a comment to their new Wizard companion: "What are you; First Level?" It was a tongue-in-cheek reference to how D&D is the game.
What if there is a similar line in this film that addresses the gasp "OwlBear Scandal"; a line of script like, "Wow, that is one heckuva Homebrew!" 🤣
As much as I love Critical Role, I hope they are just in the background. I would hate for the only takeaway from their inclusion in the movie to be "oh look Critical Role is getting more special treatment" or whatever, even though they are ACTORS.
Doesn't really bother me. I just think of it as a homebrew character that has some kind of back story to explain it. Maybe they were unique because of it and maybe even outcast from the grove because of using this forbidden shape or whatever. Just make it part of the story somehow. Who cares? Just how many groups actually follow all the rules anyway. Pretty much everyone has a bag of holding and infinite arrows 1/2 the time anyway. XD
I feel like there is a third Critical Role Cameo possibility: They are all VAs. A fantasy movie is likely to have CG characters. I can totally see Matt or one of the others voicing some or all of those (thinking about it: maybe Matt speaking multiple monsters can also be a DM nod)
I think it's best if it's just in realm movie because that way it's easiest way to explain things that aren't Rules as Written like for instance wildshape owlbear.
Because movie.
And not a specific edition of D&D being played.
As long as they're able, aka moon druid, I let druids turn into monstrosities as long as the druid has studied the creature
We're just gonna pretend shapechange isn't a thing?
I want to be acknowledged as a game. Princess Bride style.
