Apple Inc. today announced that its WWDC 2025 developer conference will kick off on June 9.
The four-day online event is expected to see the company debut new versions of its operating systems. Apple stated that developers can expect “new tools, frameworks, and features,” which suggests the iPhone maker may also update its coding tools. Apple provides a code editor, a programming language and other technologies that make it easier to develop applications for its devices.
According to Bloomberg, the main highlight of WWDC will be a redesign of Apple’s mobile operating systems. The company reportedly plans to launch new iOS and iPadOS releases that are together known as Luck internally. The update is expected to mark the biggest revamp of the operating systems in more than a decade.
Apple also plans to redesign macOS. According to Bloomberg’s sources, the version of the operating system that will debut at WWDC is codenamed Cheer and marks the most significant update since 2020.
It’s believed Apple plans to make iOS, iPadOS and macOS “more consistent” with one another. The overhaul will reportedly see the company update the icons, menus, apps, windows and system buttons. The new design is expected to be loosely based on the operating system of the Vision Pro, Apple’s mixed reality headset.
In contrast with the current version of iOS, Vision Pro uses circular app icons. It also makes more extensive use of depth and shadow effects. In addition to resizing and moving application windows, Vision Pro provides the ability to adjust their depth in a way that makes them appear farther away.
Apple is currently in the process of rolling out an artificial intelligence feature suite called Apple Intelligence. One of the upcoming capabilities will enable Siri to interact automatically with the user’s apps. According to Bloomberg, the feature is not expected to launch at WWDC.
On the other hand, it’s possible the company will introduce new hardware. Apple occasionally dedicates part of its WWDC presentation to device announcements. The Vision Pro, for example, debuted at the 2023 edition of the event along with several Macs.
This year’s WWDC could see Apple launch a new iteration of the Mac mini desktop computer. The device will reportedly have a similar form factor as the Apple TV set-top box, which is half the size of the current Mac mini. It’s expected to feature an aluminum chassis.
The next-generation Mac mini will reportedly ship in two editions. One is set to include Apple’s M4 chip, which combines 10 central processing unit cores with a graphics processing unit. It’s believed the other Mac mini edition will feature the M4 Pro, an upgraded version of the processor with 14 CPU cores and a faster GPU.
