I agree with the whole video but I do have one question, what would you have done if Bear did more than mouth you? What if he gave a full bite?
Me and my Cane Corso puppy (20 weeks) just had a battle over dominance and it wasn’t easy to win.
Great video. I have a 6 mo old German Shepherd. She had been trained treat, treat,treat. She jumps , nips , nips. We had it out. At least a draw. Realize she’s a puppy, but 50 pounds of terror play. At some point they have to get under control.
I think my male cavapoo is dominant. He will mean mug another dog with tensed body, and then nudge the other dog with his nose and try to get his head on top of the other dog. He will be hyper fixated on that one dog, whimper and shake to get to it when I try to hold him back. I don't really get it though because it's not for all dogs. It's usually towards dogs about his size.
He doesn't much care about smaller dogs and with dogs larger than him, he'll stare for a short time and then aggressively bark at it immediately so I keep him away from large dogs completely.
Positive only training is insanely, frustratingly deficient

Hey I’m no professional so take my question with a grain of salt (I’d more like to be informed). Would putting bear in a situation where he sees real violence or senses malicious intent would be beneficial, he currently thinks of it as a game everytime and he is young so running a protection simulation with a fake aggressor could turn his dominance in the correct direction?
I have a female Pyranees/Shepherd mix. I have 3 other dogs. I have an Aussie, a German Shepherd/Lab mix, and an Alaskan Malamute who is a senior. Bandit is sweet as can be to the Malamute (maybe because he's a senior?) but she bullies the other 2 dogs. She steals their toys and food and she will sit there and just stare at them. She is the sweetest dog to me but when I asked her to get off the couch she growled and kind of snapped. I grabbed her collar and made her get off the couch and had her lay down on her side. I wasn't mean but forceful. She's a huge dog and I can't have her acting like that. How do I make her stop bullying the other dogs. She always grooms Zeus (the Alaskan Malamute-senior). Is it a show of respect to a senior dog? It's fascinating!

That's how alpha dogs says a dog of the pack, they did the thing good, and they reinforce them that attitude.
Alpha's dog can correct, but overall, they can reinforce good behaviours to the pack.
The only time my border collie is disobedient is when we get animated or laugh etc like in a positive way. But that's not reasonable, expecting her to be calm when we like laugh loudly at something on TV for example. She gets excited when a stranger smiles at her. She is awesome.
Purely positive training works until it doesn't. When it doesn't, you do this.
You know how I would handle this?? Well, I probably don’t know what I’m talking about anyway, since us positive reinforcement trainers are just nutzos and have no idea about the reasons behind how dogs behave 😢
I’m a teacher and literally these dog training videos are gems for behaviour management even with teenage humans. You need to embody the ‘I’m the boss’ energy there, too.
Bear seems very intelligent how he naturally fallowed behind Prince looking for guidance,dominance by default is not what he wants but he does naturally well,the corrections helped him find the difference between ruling and to be led.
You are exactly right. I practice some positive training, but I have a very dominant Terrier right now who needs a very strict upbringing. She is the biggest "Mean Mugger" I have ever seen. Thanks for this info. We have already been practicing using the exercises for giving in to me. Displacement is very important!
I have learned more from watching your videos the last two days than the previous 8 months of other training videos with my 10 month old pup.
I have a Jack Russell that I’ve had from a puppy. As a six week old puppy, I watched him get annoyed at his brother who was trying to play with, grab his brother on the back of neck/shoulder. The other puppy definitely understood that Tigger wasn’t playing. I thought at the time,”Uh oh” but took him anyway. Everything you said is absolutely true!It’s such a pain to make him sit and wait quietly till we’re ready to leave for walks. Not allow growling at us when being corrected. Yes, he has tried to actually bite twice and both times I grabbed on either side of his head by collar and put him on the ground. He isn’t aggressive, very friendly and loving, but doesn’t like to be told what to do. I used and still use a correction collar mostly to enforce obedience with other dogs when he’s off leash. He is a real challenge but so incredibly smart- which could be more the problem. Anyway, you are correct about dominance and how to deal with it. I am sure Tigger would not be the well behaved dog he is today without the constant enforcement of his dominance. He has learned boundaries about what is acceptable and what is not and that are consequences- not punishment but consequences like having to lay on his side for 10 minutes. 😛
