I have a question. Great video though, thank you. You said the whistler was for if 'Come' was already worn out and not working correct? I'd rather just stick with 'come' and not transition to the whistler since I may not always have it with me, is that ok?
My new rescue dog just stays outside in the garden and I cannot get him in a lead to then train his recall!
Will Atherton's praise is so fantastic I'm watching multiple videos to hear more praise. 😂
Is there a video where the dog is struggling with this? this dog looks like he already knows this. I need step by step for a dog who thinks its a game
What if the whistle has been used but not correctly and the dog is now deaf to the whistle. Asking for a friend who received a full trained gun dog; gave inconsistent commands and now he loves to chase hare, sheep, horses and jump gates. Oh, and as nature intended, has his nose to the ground every other second… #wirehairedvizla
I have found GR’s are easy to train, but my 10 pound morkie is a huge challenge. She’s five and loves to run and will not come when called, so still working on that. Will try the whistle next. She does come if I get a squeaky ball and throw it; she brings it back for another throw. I use a 20ft light lead and step on it to stop her.
Why is this a "how to" video? It's just an ad for your course…
okay but i have a chihuahua-minpin mix. loves toys.
Im just about to start recall training with my 1 year old rescue dog ive had him 4 weeks now all his obedience training is going amazinly well hes a very smart dog we have built a great relationship all ready so im watching this cause ive learned all my stuff from watching will hes just amazing ❤
I really don't like the idea of having to use a whistle. For one thing, it must be horribly annoying if and when there are other people/dogwalkers around. Plus I don't think you need equipment. Can't everyone whistle, if only a whispery one? Dogs have excellent hearing. My dog will come to "twit twit" type using only my lips type whistle. He will come when I snap my fingers.
Ugh jealous of the ones that can send the dogs to you. I need you in Minnesota.
Hi where did you get your whistle from and what is the brand thanks
What should an owner do if/when the dog starts ignoring the whistle just as it did for the command though?
I wish you would show a dog that doesn't already have good skills. Like a puppy that doesn't know how t9 come at all. What do you do? How d9 you start the training? Yank him in on the long line?
How long of a line is that slip lead? I'm trying to find one
Where can I get the same whistle?
Can you recal train a sighthound? Reliably?
I have a greyhound saluki cross (1year old) and she has been very difficult to train, but she comes back without distractions. But if there is any minor distractions she is off like a lightening bolt. She would happily follow any random dog home.
She doesnt care about any treats (even high value) and not bothered for fussing and ears are turned off. She has improved slowly over time… But i want to be able to walk her safely off leash.
Excellent explanation Will,thank you.
That works until rabbit apears in the backround.. He know he must come but he really wants to run.. what to do so ?
Ive recently rehomed a five month old Beagle cross and am finding her much harder to train than my previous dogs. Her recall is particularly bad so am pleased to have discovered your videos and will be putting this into practice. Thanks for such informative videos.
I really appreciate your having incorporated a whistle into the recall. I have a 1 year old husky/Belgian malinois cross. She is very boisterous and loves to run. We spend our winters at our off grid log cabin in the Yukon. This is her first time at the cabin with us and I have been working on her recall. I walk the dogs daily on our lake (frozen now and with skidoo walking paths tracked out for us). Her recall has been pretty good, but as the snow absorbs noise, my voice recalls sometimes go unnoticed. I have a whistle and have wondered if I could bring that in to her recall training. This explained it perfectly! I can't wait to get her out on the lake and start bringing this in to her training. Just have to wait for it to warm up a bit as we are down to -28C today! Brr! Thanks so much, Will!
