I always liked Alien 3 and Predator 2 movies. Both movies suffered at the time but it have grown on people after all these years
Alien 3 now is the perfect movie to close the Alien trilogy, and Predator 2 is the perfect sequel to the first movie because it's essence is all there.
Conclusion: Some things age like a fine wine 🍷
Note: Alien Ressurection is not bad movie and still enjoyable to watch but doesn't follow the essence of the first three, imo
Just like every other film director they are always being pushed by the producers. William Friedkin and Coppola know that very well. Fincher was in good company. It is my favorite Alien film. The intellectual version. Skinheads in space.

I really hope Fincher eventually does a proper Directors Cut of the film (based on all the original film material), & doing reshoots to fill in any gaps where needed.
Obviously, it would be best if any reshoots were just of scenery & the alien (with modern effects), but if reshoots of actors were needed, de-aging tech has got very good these days (particularly when shot in shadows which this film mostly is), so it might work if the actors were up for it! Regardless, I hope we eventually get his final edit (with not studio interference).
Alien 3 is my favorite David Fincher film

I think this movie suffered from an inexperienced Director (at the time) caught between shifting production trends, animatronics vs the new up-and-coming CGI method. The studio most likely tried to push the involvement of CGI (as it was no doubt costing them some money to develop) and the filmmaker wanting to stick to the previous movies tried and tested methods with puppetry. It's clear they could not perfect the CGI but at the same time they struggled with the animatronics resulting in a great film let down by specific visuals. I would love, LOVE, Fincher to do this movie now.
Despite the HELL Fincher and others went through they made a magnificent job creating a unique sci-fi movie

David Fincher sounds like a little beyotch. It was his first film and he should have known the studio was going to have their fingers all over it. He could have just dropped it and chosen a different project. He's overrated and sounds like a worse director to work for than Stanley Kubrick ever was.
Alien 3 is an excellent movie and would have been so much better if the studios had let David 'do his thing'. I'm looking forward to the 'fan film' from A34K which will be coming out in the next few months. It will be in 4K with a LOT of work done to clean up the CGI and color palates.
After watching Wreckage and Rage, I understand why he didn't participate for the documentary. I don't blame him, but his insight would have been so interesting in a lot of parts as a contrast to what the other departments experienced. Specifically the rod puppets; the team working on it remember it as this really innovative system they had to create from scratch and seem proud of it. To me its one of the worst parts of the movie. I never knew it wasn't just bad CGI, and it makes sense why he may have hated the result of it. At one point they mention he had them moving it as fast as they could to make it more realistic, but it rarely ever worked out well.
I'm going to watch the Assembly Cut soon to really see if it makes a difference, but given he was not involved in it, there will always be a missing element. I just feel bad for him at this point, and even people who felt like he wasn't very nice to work for did all say they understood it later and it made sense with how invasive and controlling the Fox studio heads were. Knowing how great of a catalog of films he has produced, its really a shame Alien 3 is so disappointing. If they let him make the movie he wanted, we could have had one of best sci-fi/horror trilogies ever made.
He deserves to have his version. If Snyder could get a budget to make his Justice League, Fincher should have final cut on Alien3.

What are the chances David would do a director’s cut for Alien 3? 20th Century Studios ought to hand a formal apology and a massive retroactive compensation to incite him doing a director’s cut.
Ok, it's been 22 years, the man needs to get over himself and the troubled production. It's not like Alien3 is a terrible film. Reportedly all the actors really enjoyed working with him, and he had a vision that he was able to convey to the screen despite having no script to work with when he was signed onto the production. He worked through the failed VFX attempts. Sorry David, you need to get over it. It didn't happen yesterday, it's been over 20 years, dude. Your voice needs to be heard, because you DIRECTED the damn film. Your name is on it.
Of course, David would never read this. But like him, I don't mince words. So from one artist to another, we own our work and we have to own up to it. Warts and all. I have some pretty garbage art out there along with the great pieces but I own it all. And I have fans that love the garbage. I'm not going to disown it. I don't disown anything I have made, that has affected someone else.
He needs to get over himself. He isn't to blame for the dumpster fire.
As much as I love Alien 3, knowing how good Fincher is, if they had just let him do his vision it would've been truly incredible and we would've had a fantastic trilogy, not just in the eyes of the superfans, but everyone.

ALIEN 3 MASTERPIECE.
I actually re-watched the theatrical cut a few days ago, after having seen it for the first time (both versions) on the same Blu-ray a few years ago now (I'm not a kid, I just never saw it). But I have to say, while I thoroughly enjoyed it before, I actually both enjoyed and APPRECIATED it this time around. I mean, I already did appreciate it for what it tried to do, but it actually didn't go down in appreciation but a little up. And that's more so in terms of how good the acting actually is, also for the "background characters" that don't just feel like "filler". Even though they might not have big roles, you have the likes of Pete Postletwaith just being these small characters but still bring a lot of personality or "gravitas" to them in a way. I mean like, they don't feel insignificant, while say the group of people in "Resurrection" feel a lot more "throwaway" like they're fodder. And sure, some of the characters in "3" were meant to be "fodder", but it's like they were set up to care about a little more, despite them being serious criminals, you can't help but feel bad for them being locked up there defenseless with these aliens.
Besides that some of the characters that get more focus also feel more gripping and they keep you on your toes. Speaking of which, probably thanks to Fincher, the whole movie feels like it's urgent, as even as an adult who has already seen this movie at least twice, I felt this kind of uncomfortable pressure to stay on edge, which doesn't happen with that many movies for me. There's just this oppressive mood consistently throughout the movie that does a lot for it.
But, the drawbacks are things like… how the aliens were handled, which aren't as frightening and more like these "jumpscare popping out of nowhere" type moments, for some reason. Not to mention "the effects" again, but while they still did amazing practical effects they put in some of the worst rotoscoped/superimposed/whatever visual effects in there and I don't understand why. It seems like a rush-job or something. First of all, it wasn't that necessary cause there aren't even that many shots, in that they probably could've done much of it practically, but I'm sure there were restrictions imposed or something. And also that those visual effects could've looked better even at that time. I mean like, 'Jurassic Park' (while it was definitely groundbreaking) wasn't made that much later. Regardless of what came at that time, I've seen ridiculously "transparent" superimposed and rotoscoped visual effects in films made in the '50s that I couldn't believe were made way back then. – And ironically, I found the CGI in the fourth movie to look a lot more realistic and solid. It was higher quality and way cleaner, despite some people criticizing it heavily. We've had worse since.
And also the action was edited poorly, just using a lot of "close" stuff intercut and making it all look hectic and frantic just to obscure the fact that there's not much to photograph and probably avoid having to do effects, be it practical or in post. It's just a bunch of visual (and aural) noise that isn't suspenseful or scary, ironically, and they missed the mark there. On top of that, it's like they just discovered Steadicam or whatever and used that for a bunch of those smooth "alien vision" shots. – OK, kind of novel, but again, it feels like a cheap way of avoiding to have to show the aliens.
In any case, I actually feel this is the most interesting or suspenseful movie, with the first being kinda outdated, while still solid and enjoyable, and the second is… also just quite noisy and a bit too goofy and overly long, while it definitely has its moments and interesting stuff. – And I have to add, while sure… they were quite blunt in just killing off the characters of the second movie, probably in an attempt to wipe the slate and do something completely different, and also sure I would've like to have seen a continuation of that as fans have been wanting and Blomkamp wanting to actually do it, I think that would also have been a bit of a cliche or… I don't know, predictable or whatever. – I mean like, it would very much be fan-servicy, and yea that's something people enjoy today and it works marketing-wise, but it would also make it kind of lame and too "comfortable". I kind of like how they just took a sharp turn with "3" and actually went really dark and oppressive, rather than having this sort of "heroic duo" blasting some aliens or whatever.
Something you could compare that to is the two "The Last of Us" games, in that people expected this "adventures of Joel and Ellie" type story, like comfort-food, but instead they just went hard right and slapped people in the face with "that twist", early on as well, and took it in a whole other and frankly more rewarding direction. – Just saying, what the masses want isn't always the right thing creatively, and I'm all for trying wildly different things and throwing the "consumer" off and making them uncomfortable. It's just very entertaining to me how people can stay upset about something like that for decades. It just shows they did something interesting rather than safe and boring. And to take a more recent and related example, while I really enjoyed "Romulus", it's probably a bit safe and boring, though it definitely has its novel stuff as well.
the worst thing is that it rewrites Ripley as some kind of reckless and naive character, if all of them were attacked by facehuggers during cryosleep it means she did not think to do a sanity check of the ship's integrity at the end of Alien 2, to make sure there's no aliens prior to going to cryosleep herself. absolutely ridiculous
If it wasn't for this mess, we might not have him fight so hard to get Fight Club made the exact way he wanted so…
What a horrible movie
Fincher should do commentary throughout the whole movie. However, that's like me having to to delve into every aspect of a previous relationship.
Wish he would recut the film and release his own directors cut someday.
Honestly, I don't think making them silhouettes would have made for nearly as powerful of a shot as the final product ended up being. Seeing the details on the Alien and the powerful emotion on Sigourney Weaver's face is what really carries this shot, silhouettes would have lost all of that
I have grown to like Alien 3 , especially after covenant its actually not that bad a movie

Alien3 really was a disappointment for me and a lot of others. Killing of 3 characters so easily in an attempt to recreate the first movie suspense really bagged it for me. Could have been so much better.
Alien 3 to me was like Alien Romulus would be to kids today. It was the one that came out at the movies when I was a kid and it's the first one I saw, and it was a benchmark for me. What I saw was a lightning fast, vicious Alien, so much so that it made the other movies feel slow, and in some ways clunky and dated. So the problems other audiences had coming from 2 to 3, I never had. The thing I thought about Alien 3 at the time, and it was very bold, was killing Ripley at the end. And at the time it was pretty parallel to the other big franchise, Terminator, with both protagonists going down in a vat of fiery lava. Ripley's sacrifice was incredibly emotional and tender in my opinion, and that inevitability carried through the whole movie. There's something so real about Alien 3, I feel like I'm really there in that world. It's a film that's very dear to me and it's definitely a 90's film, one of the most industrial films ever, maybe. So in the end the studio tensions and Fincher's distaste for the film, in a way all that negativity feeds into what the production is and what the world is. You can feel it in the film.

I feel it would be even better, if somehow they would go in and redo the CGI shots of the Alien, so it would be as great as the incredible practical effect shots of the Alien…
It's likely a one off, but I'd gladly be wrong. I love Alien 3 almost as much as the first two. Sure, they shouldn't have done what they did with Hicks, Newt and Bishop, but the depth and the way the film is shot is bloody amazing! True to David Fincher form, and it is genuinely iconic / memorable indeed.
I honestly prefer the darkness and bleakness of Alien 3 than the vietnam-eske sillyness of Cameron's Aliens any day.
I love Alien, I love Aliens, I love Alien 3 and I love Alien 4… Each one is perfect in its own way with its own flaws.
Alien 3 for me the only flaw is certain scenes CGi… Practical looks amazing, some CGi looks "weak" . But the film itself is great. Yeah, I understand people were frustrated because of Hicks and Newt, but it was mamy years later, Newt would have beet older (actress) which would cause problems.
Btw… Romulus is memorable iconic masterpiece which must become classic.
