I had a housemate that could do a line of acid once. It wasnt that impressive. I like the idea of the regular druid being able to turn into bigger and better stuff, and then the moon druid getting monstrocities, or even some magical beasts (which arent in 5e) as a specialty.
A griffon at level 6 sounds pretty sweet to me. Been a long time since I've played a druid but it is one of my favorite classes.
I could be mistaken but isn't a griffon capable of being a mount? At level 6 being able to fly team mates around would be a pretty big deal. They have a good multi attack as well
It has been said,"You can milk anything with nipples."
If you are going to redo druids, figure out how to make circle of land a viable choice. Of course, Moon has always been popular, and I've seen a table or two with Spores. Fire, and/or Stars, I am unaware of anyone who has played a land druid in the history of 5e.
When my young daughter joined our 4e group years ago, she turned into animal mashups all the time, and what is an Owlbear but a mashup? A separate Circle will make it feel special
I vote let Druids wild shape into any creature period 🤷🏻♂️
With the reveal of level specific feats in DnD One, why not have a Druid specific feat at lvl 12, or 16, that allows the Druid to transform into monstrosities with only X or Y limitations? Like your example of limited intelligence, and CR ratings that druid could normally shape into?
I made circle of mutation. Which let's the character manifest aspects of the creature or, when they are the right level, they can expend both wild shapes and become the creature.
I've always house ruled Owlbears as Beasts, just think of it with spelljammer out there you could have a planet with owlbears as just a normal animal. The stats of an owlbear could be used to represent a CR 3 bear, there is nothing crazy about it like a Cockatrice is. So a druid that can do monstrosities like a Cockatrice wont bother with owlbear.
I never read the description of owlbears. I just assumed they were natural creatures in dnd, just like you said about The Last Airbender 🤷♂️
Circle of Monsters druid would rock, hell we need Circle of Aberration and Circle of Fiends
Would Druids think of monstrosities as a blight against nature?
Gave a Druid in my game a magic item which opened up the griffin to her wildshaper options. Just think cool items
I let my spore druid player do plant shapes. No reason moon druid couldn't do a monstrosity, maybe after a quest. Maybe allow monstrosity forms to the land druids as long as they're native to that environment
mimics are CR2. just say'n…
When I DM, I offer a homebrew feat allowing monstrosity wild shapes.
I think that the trailer has some brilliant animation, and I think the idea of of monstrous Druid subclass sounds great. That being said, the 14th level Moon Druid subclass ability would let a Druid wild shaped into a polar bear disguise itself as a horse and then transform its appearance into an owl ear with a bonus action, so the flavor is already available through the ribbon feature.
New possibility: the movie is running 6e ("One D&D") and they change the Owlbear to a beast in that edition?
One of the RAW beasts you can turn into there is a 2 headed spider. Clearly as nature intended.
