That’s not a reactive dog
You are the best! Ty for teaching us too
I just did exactly what he said, and my dog Ava was so engaged, she knows to sit already, but the tugging on the leash was new to me, at first, she wasn't as engaged, but after a few tries, she looked at me and waited for the next command. I then incorporated the treat, every time I say come she walks close to me and sometimes needs to be told to sit sometimes she sits on her own and gets rewarded immediately. She was recently attacked by another dog that has now caused her leash reactiveness due to fear. Def will be doing this 2-3 times a day in my living room for a few weeks before moving on being around other dogs outside.
Ok but my reactive dog would never be that chill if another dog came out 😂
Question- I have a herding dog (Icelandic Sheepdog) that is reactive because she likes every dog she sees. She is 18 months old. I am a little frustrated because I do or try to do what is shown here. I do live in a more urban style neighborhood where the distance from the front door to outside is a matter of feet and not acres. She has the typical herding instinct that every bicycle that hits a certain speed becomes a sheep. She could be 1/4 mile away from a bicycle at an off leash part and hear the bike and wants to herd the bike. I have tried being at a distance to get her comfortable with a bike. On a leash – this is marginally better, than off leash. It really is not aggression with other dogs- it is more like lets go have an instant play date. Oh- we spend several hours a day at an off leash park so she can burn her energy chasing balls, doing some training outside versus all indoors where the extra space on a lunge line is helpful. Once away from the instant play date- she does the visual check in and I do treat for those checkins on the walk or "health break".
Help, how to stop a dog being reactive in a car while you driving?
Very informative the thank you
That’s not dog reactivity tho
This is a great video and super great info here. My dog has great leash manners, responds well to leash pressure, has a solid heel, and responds to verbal commands and hand gestures. BUT, if she sees a dog, all bets are off and I can barely control her. She's got a very loud, very mean bark, and I'm just waiting for the day it gets us in trouble. Any advice on a situation like this? Previous trainers we've worked with have told us it's fear and anxiety based. They've helped us make some progress, but it doesn't seem to stick.
SHUT UP. I got a 2 year old shepherd-staffie from the shelter and she's bananas on leash. I did one session with a trainer and it got better, but then it was hit and miss. I just started doing this with my dog – instand difference. In the house, then in the yard. We'll see how it goes out on the sidewalk, but wow wow wow, thank you!!
That dog is nowhere near reactive! 😄
My dog pays ZERO attention to me when we are walking. I do have him sit whenever I stop walking but he is always focused outwardly. Nothing I say or so gets his attention for more than a couple of seconds. I have trained dogs from puppies and I know how to handle a dog but he only wants to lunge and sniff and pee on everything. Walking him is not fun.
This is a great game for the dog AND handler. The results are so immediate and the dog loves it! Kudos for your sharing this with "novice" dog owners. Creating a great relationship with your dog is key to everything and brings such joy.
My dog was living with a dog that did not know how to socialize and played pretty hard with her and has even given her scars. She does not live with this dog anymore but, she always barks at other dogs and try’s to play with other dogs and it seems like she is attacking the other dog. We don’t know how to fix this problem and this video has really helped but we need a little more help. If you have any insight on what to do please tell me I am clueless on what else to do. Thank you love ur vids btw
I have a dog and I may have to get rid of her she was on death row at the shelter and she is reactive to men bc she was abused by one and I am so lost
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
“Why don’t you just learn how to handle a dog first” lol
😂
Thanks for the vud
I❤U
Can anyone point me j the direction of a truly reactive dog. My month old puppy lunges crazy hard at dogs, bikes & joggers. Australian Kelpie with energy to burn
Is that a prong collar🧐
I would never give my dog to a shelter just cause he’s reactive . & he’s not only reactive but aggressive towards dogs he doesn’t know because we were attacked by 2 dogs & I got bit & he’s been like this ever since . I’ve already got the heel/sit thing down . But If there’s another dog I always go the other way & try to avoid them always .
I don't want to get rid of it but I'm not going to have any choice if I can't get any other control
I need major help my dogs running over me I love my dog but I can't control me when I need help
How do I get in touch with you personally
My dog is 6 years old this year and I’m not sure if this will work for him. But I’m going to try it, I never see anyone working with old dogs. I hope this works. Also someone told me that they react because they feel we as owners can’t protect them from other dogs so they react to protect themselves in a way?? And I’m a little girl so I’m not sure how to make him feel more secure with me but I’m sure he doesn’t know I’m just a girl. Anyways ready to try this in the morning with him and I’ll continue all week if I have to, I’d just love to see him calm.
Wow actual training not just a waste of time commercial. Thanks for that 😊
But the dog isn´t reactive at all so is easy.
Am i able to do this with a harness?
I need to see how reactive that dog actually was … cause trust me my dog would still go skitzo after that 😂
I used 10:23 to have two Irish Wolfhound x Bull Mastiff dogs (1 Male & other female). The older M was docile with other dogs and people and was 7 years older than the F.
When I got the F I tried puppy classes at the vet & different’trainers’ to 10:23 😅help me set her up for success. But around 12 months of age 2 little dogs moved in next door that constantly fought through the fence. She became quite reactive on the lead and one trainer told me that I needed to engage more so I needed to rev her up to increase my energy. Another told me to put coins in a money box to scare her etc. (the dog training industry in Australia is rife with self professed experts). Finally one day she broke the fence and got out and attacked another dog. I paid the vet bill and she was put under a control order. This turned out to be a good thing for her as they gave me the name of an excellent trainer who shares the same thoughts and processes as you. I saw a lot of improvement but in the mean time I had 2 heart operations and a serious fall requiring a bone graft and reconstructive surgery.
This dog has always been protective I think of both myself and my older dog. I think she saw us both as weak. I had moved away from my great trainer to be closer to my family $ got a local one. She said there was nothing I could do with this dog and it should be put down. But as I got better I got stronger and I have seen improvement however after my old boy passed just recently I have noticed a dramatic change. When she goes to the groomers she is so placid – there are all sorts of dogs and she doesn’t take any notice. Some are off lead and come and sit next to her. So I started taking her to the park and keeping in lead and I would sit at a picnic table and tie her lead to the table. She seemed very nervous but was ok with dogs in the distance but not ones that approached the table aka me. Do you think she is purely aggressive and sees these dogs as prey as she is a hunting breed or she needs her confidence built up?
I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover … You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide … Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff … But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!
Watching this…. I'm really confused and concerned. The dog in question already very responsive and well behaved and trained. And was not, and is not, reactive at all.
In all honesty, those of us with REAL reactive dogs… no really… I mean ACTUALLY reactive. They will listen, and we can work on training all day long… but the second another dog is within their bubble they go crazy and ignore all training, all commands, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
I cant believe I came across this video just now! I have learned so much! I wonder if the above is right for reactivity plus aggression as well. And also what is the best collar to use in such cases? I feel like the prong collar that we have is making it worse.. this is a great great and very educative video. Thank you Tom!
Great vid 👌
I love this. Can't wait to try it with my 20 month old Great Dane. He is 130 pounds so any reaction can be a lot.
