Sonic Rush Adventure had a genuinely great online multiplayer mode with full stage races. Though, it sucks that its player base dwindled to 0 by 2010 and DS Wi-Fi shut down anyway in 2014. And Sega’s not even to thank for that actual Sonic multiplayer; Dimps is.
We need a new Sonic multiplayer experience that will last, one that isn’t an iOS/Android autorunner…
But given Sega’s track record with multiplayer, removing main-game multiplayer from Super Monkey Ball in 2006 and never adding it back in any entry since, and Puyo Puyo Championship’s online playerbase being dead on arrival in 2019 with <10 players daily, I seriously doubt Sega’s ability to even pull off good multiplayer anymore, let alone maintain or support it

I think that what they mean by "is the second game on the Sonic series" is that SEGA is attempting to mend the wedge between Classic and Modern Sonic by retkoning Frontiers between CD/2.
I remember when they tried to recreate the Adventure tones in Forces and it just felt artificial and didn't come across genuine or authentic.

If they wanted high review scores TRULY, they would have listen to the fans and gave us gameplay.
We shouldn’t get our hopes too high, but I’m hoping it’s at least decent and better than Forces. I’ve been saying this for like 2 years more times than I can count now, and I’m gonna say the exact same thing again: “surely SEGA has learnt their lesson by now” seriously though. It’s been almost 5 years since the release of Forces so this game better be on the right path. And if it isn’t, I don’t even know what to think anymore. But I love this franchise, it’s my favourite of all time and I’m gonna try stick with it no matter what.
Whatever happens, I’ll still buy sonic frontiers, probably for the switch so I can play it anywhere on the go or at home. But that being said I still wonder exactly how this open world sonic game will work. Maybe it’ll be like Breath of the Wild with huge area and tiny areas to collect stuff (like the shrines). Or maybe I can try and hope it’ll work like The Batman Arkham games where the levels and missions are all connected with the world, but I think that’s shooting to far. I’m not the biggest sonic fan, I haven’t played a good 3D sonic game since Adventure 1, and maybe Adventure 2 (I don’t like how it doesn’t feel as open world like Adventure 1, but I digress the levels are definitely well better structured than the first). I’ve been trying to love these 3D sonic games these past years Rise of lyric, Generations, Colors, 06, Forces, Unleashed, Shadow; etc. But sometimes when the game is good like Generations it’s so short. And when it’s bad well- I think we all know the problems with the bad ones. I will say this the music has never been a let down, I will gladly pick up any Sonic Soundtrack over another video game soundtrack any time the music is good. But we’ve seen trailers and snip its of the open world, so my expectations are pretty high cause this looks really good.
I get that the quotes here can be seen as troubling, but let's not forget that this isn't just them randomly coming out and saying these things; they were answering a very specific question at a presumably professional meeting specifically for analysts and *investors*, and translation often alters the actual wording of things so they don't always sound in English as they were intended to in Japanese.

No its not a guaranteed regular thing to target high scores.. Not all game companies target A+ all the time. E.g. It was fairly obvious Nintendo weren't targeting as high with Arceus as they have with mainline Pokemon games (though Arceus did indeed rate very highly), hence you'll naturally see less money invested by companies on certain franchises. The more you spend to make a game higher quality the higher they can fall.
Based on the quality of SGEA's Sonic games for a decade (at least) they obviously settled on them not being potential 90% meta critic games. I'd be incredibly surprised if they were launching these Sonic games expecting them to get the critical reception of say, the Zelda series. Whereas its quite obvious Nintendo are always aiming for 90+ on Zelda and Mario. We've all wanted Sonic to be excellent for years but I just don't see this being a target SEGA were even aiming for… Until now apparently.
Publishers have seemingly never cared for the user reviews out of the gate. I'd be genuinely surprised if they meant user reviews and not Critical Reviews.
I completely agree, we need to see some actual gameplay before any word from SEGA is trusted here. Personally I'm hoping this sis mainly open world and less level based, as I don't think linear 3D Sonic levels have ever interested.
Frontiers is going to be a ton of people’s first Sonic game so it HAS to be good,we are in an era where Sonic is slowly going back to the mainstream eye thanks to the movies and only the movies so they can’t fuck up another game…not to mention if Frontiers is back i’m only following the movies from that point,i’m risking paying $60 day one for Frontiers so it better be at least playable and fun 65% of the time.
I've made comments before but if the villain is enigmatic and ghostly as there is warped physics on all the islands and activated architecture that glows as there's thunder storms akin to the end parts of Devil May Cry 1 then that would be perfect, maybe even a hint of the end of the world like what 06 did in Last Story, just something fresh and truly terrifying because the end of the 2010s games suuuuuuuck, seriously where's the hopelessness, despair and terror that I felt in Last Story of 06?
