I’m sure cats learn more than 30 words … they say cats have the same learning capabilities, of a 3 yr old child and they learn things in a similar fashion& we have all seen some very smart 3 yr olds and some that no one sadly took up time with and have a learning curve… I think cats are similar if you do association and give them problems to solve as kitten they retain the ability of that and apply that to other times . Like I have a cat that before I would set her bowl down I would get her to sit up on her hind legs …. Well she associated it with the – sit-up- command well I noticed when she wanted something like attention, to go out a closed door she would find me and sit-up so I thought she was hungry til she would look puzzled when I went and put food in her bowl or wonder why she didn’t want the food that was already in the bowl … she would just be like uh what the hell…it took a few times before I realized she associated sit-up with getting what she wanted…

I raised my cat like a dog since he was 4 months old
He knows his name, sit, come, no, stop, up (to climb on something) and If I say OMG he runs away because I only say that when i’m upset lol
He knows all the variations of his name.

Cats respond to their names and can be taught commands. How do they know these studies are not so accurate it depends on the cat. I changed my cats names 3 times they always learn their name. Go in their carrier by command. Pecan and Almondmeal are named after my wheatfree grainfree diet, that’s why I changed their name. Stop saying that stuff that cats don’t come my cats come right away even at 3am. Many cats come just as much as dogs.

I always try to keep a pet’s name when I adopt (unless the name was just chosen by the shelter, and they don’t really know it). If I HATE a name, then Jessie becomes Chessie. Morris becomes Boris. If it’s Pazuzu, it’s definitely changing to Isuzu. I make sure it sounds like their old name so they don’t just decide names have no meaning or lose their identity.

However, if my friend took a can of cat food hooked it up to the electric can opener, the moment that wiring sound started her cat would come storming down the stairs like the kids in my old high school would charge down the stairs after the lunch bell sounded!!!! Lol!!! At that time, there was no need to say the cat's name!!! There was no need to say "Oh Morris … Din … Din" like in the old TV commercial. Lol!!!
